Bc, yeah, capillary action. Great way to grow seedlings, if instead of a jar you use a large container with room for many plants. Once the tomatoes get their real leaves, they move to a similar setup.

This would be a good set up for those of us that forget to water their indoor plants...

I need to get my act together and register as an organ donor
Blood donations a bit of a pain, the closest place to donate is 2 1/2 hours away...

Being an organ donor totally gives me the willies... will they really wait until you are dead? My dad is a doc and says nope, it isn't safe.

I used to donate plasma all of the time.... it was tough because my blood pressure was so low, took a long time. But I still went as often as they would take me, which was once a week..... uh, I got paid though, $20 a pop I think.

I have only donated blood a few times... they aren't ever that excited about my blood... I have antibodies to something or other.... how funny... it has been so many years that I have forgotten.

Question: I keep hearing ducks are more hardy then chickens when it comes to cold. Do you think a shelter like this would be sufficient for Cayuga and silver appleyard ducks?

Our temperatures will go as cold as -30C plus wind chill in the winter. The other plan would be to house them in with the chickens during the real cold spells.
I REALLY like my duck coop.... but yes, when I first got them they lived under an upside down garden cart.

Here is the inside of the coop, the girls like the second story, Drake stays below right by the door to act as guard.

Outside of coop, notice nice big area with plastic for solar gain.

A better inside shot, so you can see the big plastic wall.

Thanks @Alaskan . Very inspiring. DH cut down 30+ trees last weekend, which means we have plenty of posts for the duck shelter and I think we have some plywood left from other projects, plus pallets waiting to be recycled. I should be able to make something out of that. Then fill the shelter with straw and good to go!

Bleh spell checks not working

Yeah organ donation is creepy.... But still I would like to (possibly naively) think that the Dr would do what's right.... I'm also all for donating my body to science... But I'm too young to sign up for that atm....

Good lord this kids so sick... This zofram he is on (super gravol) is $9 a table! 1/2 tab ever 4 hours... Yikes
But it works like a hot bleep

Man I hate being bleeped

thanks! The second story part is what I think was originally a table thing that held a big fuel oil tank. I used that to hold the back part of the roof. I cut down pallets and fit them on the short long side as a wall.

The majority of that wood was partly rotten... I just made sure that the roof was at a steep slant so that it wouldn't collapse... it has made it through 2 winters (OK, 1 winter, this last winter was just a super long fall)

Glad to hear the meds are doing something!

Not sure I could make that decision now to do organ donation. After I am dead I don't need my organs though. I recently read an article that said doctors could still use some organs and tissues after you are dead (not just brain dead). There is a certain time frame but it's doable!

@BriardChickens
Do you know anyone with dark Cornish?
Nope.. but check out ACE, they are also quite active on facebook. Might be worth it for you to join facebook just for that

oh, @BriardChickens my description of the coop was meant to make clear that I am obviously all "posts, what posts?" as in, you don't need no stinking posts!

My duck coop is just sitting there right on the ground. Nothing is sunk in.

Now, I did use posts in my bantam coop.... but that is because I did a totally different design... no leaning roof, no sturdy table.... so it needed posts.
