Dixie Chicks

Same here in NY minimum six chicks.
I'm starting my tomatoes in 55 gallon barrels cut down. Going to put plastic on them like their own personal greenhouses. That way I won't have to transplant them and wait for transplant shock. We can get heavy frosts until the end of May.

oooh!  Hen, did you get one of those cool commercial candlers???

Just a kick ace little flashlight. The duck eggs are just really easy to candle despite being super thick shelled.

Sam, do you mind taking a pic of your chili peppers with a tape measure in the picture, I'd like to do some comparison. Also, what date did you plant again?

Feb 20
I'll get a tape measure pic sometime today.
The size is dependent on how many I have in a pot, and seems relative to variety. My second wave of peppers are up, 3rd planting should be soon.

Okay, mine went in Feb 15. The tallest one is about 6 inches, but most of them are about 4. I probably need to move them to bigger pots again soon, I can see some roots protruding from the bottom of the pots. I think they would benefit from going on the windowsill soon too, they're not getting enough light from my fluorescent bulb. I just need to find some good water containers to keep under them.

Ohio has a state law that you have to buy all poultry in groups of 6 or more at hatcheries and feed stores. That is why my chicken math is out of control!!! Wish we could only buy one or 2. Last year when our buff orpington chick died, I wanted to replace her. Had to buy 6 though. I assumed this was a law everywhere, but finding out it's not. I have also seen private sellers implement this rule and say it's the law. I figure they are just trying to unload their birds and don't buy from them.

It is illegal to owe on your lawn. You know that can be picked up on Google Satillite? It shows everything.

Arkansas has the same law. It has to do with the chicks being able to keep the warmth they need and to keep folks from getting a chick or two then as it grows abandoning it. I kind of agree with the rule myself. Makes folks think before they go and buy.

I don't in force it myself.

That is illegal here, if anyone sees you anyway.
The state law is six, I just read on a NY thread someone say their TSC doesn't carry chicks because their town or county has a min 25 and not very many people want to buy 25. They said they guessed they could go the next town over TSC and smuggle them in Lol!
The only reason some hatcheries have a minimum of 15 or 25 is to keep them warm in shipping.

I understand a specific hatchery having a "keep warm" minimum... but they are doing that because it makes sense.... not because the government says you have to

Wowsers!

(OK, I could scream for years.... I suppose I will just say 'no comment')

I've noticed reading hatchery reviews Dave's garden has a lot of hatchery reviews, that the majority of complaints of dead chicks came from people only ordering a few. When I ordered from Meyer's last year their min order in cold months is 15, after April min is 3. I only wanted 11 but ordered a extra ten. All arrived healthy and lived.

Another point is probably that chickens are social animals, and that law is supposed to keep people from buying a single chicken and keeping it alone. I think regulation is a useful tool for many things, but it is often used in the wrong way. I didn't like it when they forbid smoking in bars and restaurants, but after seeing the effects for a couple of years, I have to say it was a good thing. I also think firearm registering is a good thing. But then there are some laws I just don't understand. Like when I worked nights, if I wanted to buy beer while shopping for food in the morning, I had to go to the store after 9. Because it's illegal to sell alcohol in stores between 21 and 9. A much more efficient law would be not to sell to people who are clearly intoxicated. That's forbidden too, but I'd say the clock thing just makes life more difficult for normal people.

Some states have a law that you cannot have just one horse on your property.... because they are herd animals and need companionship.

In California...its against the law to pee on the lawn Or deFecate... Even along the freeway in an emergency...

OUt in the back country on my eighteen acres I just go where ever I need to.... I figure if some one pops up out of the brush they wont look for long.....
