  DHs English setter got out of her pen last night or sometime early this morning and attacked my chickens.  That darn dog killed my only 2 CCL hens (that I got from @minihorse927
), she also killed one of my barred rock hens and badly injured the other barred rock hen and one of my CCL roos (King Tut).  I put peroxide on their wounds and put them together in a cage.  They are both badly traumatized.  They will not eat or drink.  Gotta give them time.  Hopefully they make it.  I am super sad and super mad.  I went to work this morning not knowing anything had happened and when I got home this afternoon there were bodies and feathers scattered all over the yard.  It sucks.

In other (better) news..............today is lockdown day.  I have 4 CCL eggs to go in the bator after this hatch.  The ones due to hatch are mostly random mixes.  Also, we got a WHITE egg today!!!  I don't know who laid it, but it was a beautiful pearly white egg .

Did you have any eggs set from the guys gone?

You might invest in a microscope and learn to do AI.... I hear its not too difficult. But the microscope will tell you if you have active sperm or if hes shooting blanks.

I can just see that conversation down at the feed store.. do you sell chick sperm or inoculated doodads to impregnate my chicken....or how to collect rooster semen

I don't think there's any in this hatch due to hatch Monday late night/Tuesday-can't remember/can't look now because I did lock down this morning, but I have 4 saved eggs that I plan on incubating as soon as these are done. Hope for the best

oh no @Outpost JWB so sorry about your chickies and your dog...that would sooo suck... I was for sure that happened to me once but just found loki laying in the coop with them...

sound like 50 with his zoo kepper comments..... he was trying to tempt me to get another turkey at the feed store today!!! and what did they have in AGAIN gold laced wyandottes.....they so suck lol.........or How outright Irritated and upset I was got thru and they are working on it..red bourbun turkey....

Sorry to ask Amberjem, but what's the deal on the GLWs? I had 3 chicks, now down to 2.....bought at the feed store. LOL!

@Alaskan I'm not do sure the fertility problem is your Maran only. I went through and candles the 12 he gave me. I think 6 were fertile.

Well I couldn't wait until dark. Some of those eggs are close to 2 weeks old so didn't want to wait a second longer.
Oprington wanted out the moment I lifted the lid when I took the golf balls out. By the time she had 4 eggs she was pushing them around with her beak. By egg 7 she was walking around again but I think the signs are good.

Just gotta remember to check her for her own eggs regularly now.

I plan to candel on my next days off. So they start not this coming Thursday but the one after. So day 12 and 10 for the 2 different set days.

waited all last season they never got them in the first three shipments they didnt get them in again figured they wouldnt I drove 60 miles away to their sister store to to get them, and sinc ethen they have had them in every week! lol

I actually have an AI certificate

but it was for mammals... not birds. And he does get about half of the eggs fertilized, just not all of them. My Dominique rooster has a bunch more hens and I only got a very few unfertilized eggs from him.

Try not to beat yourself up over it too much... and stare at the super pretty eggs to keep your mind off of it.

I once had a chicken that had been attacked by a bald eagle survive perfectly. She didn't move the first day, and I am not sure she ate or drank either (if she did it was a tiny amount when I wasn't looking), but the next day she managed to eat and drink a bit more, and she continued improving until she was all better.

She even had to make it through surgery.. I had to sew up a big flap of skin, and then I left a deep puncture wound open to heal from the inside out.

Wow! I hope you didn't pay too much for eggs that were only 1/5 fertile.

I still need votes as to what to do with my one egg with the small crack. It is a tiny bit of an indent and a tiny bit of spiderweb, but very small really.

Should I leave it be? Or drip wax over it?
