Dixie Chicks

just tired...

too many separate pens... too much poop....

mostly I am angry at chickens for the Marans eggs not hatching (I realize that that is not rational)

And, I want lots of more space for the new ones growing up

And I just have no interest in killing and eating a bunch of old hens... thought I could maybe get cash for them instead

@Alaskan
I was going to triple the size of my coop to keep three breeds separate.
Now I'm thinking of just doubling it and keeping a mixed flock, and building a couple large tractors for breeding pens.

I don't have the gadget to measure humidity.  I have a borrowed Styrofoam incubator with a turner tray in it.  The plugs are missing and the thermometer is a flat flimsy thing that came with it.  I make sure the water wells are filled once a week & especially in Lock down.  I put a wet washcloth in there & periodically wet it when I'm removing chicks.

So far we have 1 EE, 4 mix.  One of the mix looks just like a SS chick.  (Striped and looks like a chipmunk:love ).  Several more are pipping.

@vehve
,  I know "Que Sera, Sera".   And I am not a control freak.....arguable, but it's kind of like I am 6 years old or something on hatch day!  I FREAK OUT!  :weee :fl :pop :woot :barnie :eek: :jumpy :yesss: :ya :celebrate

Marking that little EE with a leg band was much harder than I anticipated.  Little bitty feet, big scissors, not a good combination....
if you're using zip ties to Id chicks, toe nail clippers are a better choice for cutting the end of the tie off. Better chance of not taking a toe with it.

:ya bunnies!

I'm still going big, but I'm not sure if I'll make separate pens inside the coop or keep a mixed flock, I can always separate it down the road... I'm leaning toward cement floor so if I get outta chickens the building will make a good shop or something....

Psycho broodiness is now officially contagious here, lol...

3rd one to go in the last week...

My chocolate orp is broody again. 2nd time this month. I broke her the first time, this time, not much luck.

Oh and I hatched a black ohiki :)

Sam, I'd go with a dirt floor and a just pour a concrete floor if you get out of chickens. Concrete will suck all the ammonia into it. I would also put up partitions already, you do't have to take them into use, you can just keep doors open, but it's a heck of a lot easier to just build them from the get go than to add them later. Plus, having walls that block site lines a bit will keep things calmer in the coop even though the birds would be allowed to move freely between the sections.
