Dixie Chicks

My lord $125 sounds like a lot to pay for the chickens!
I was fussy over $5 a dozen for hatching eggs. Maybe I'm just cheap (DW is shaking her head yes at me being cheap)

Your dear wife is right

I paid $30 a dozen (6 French Maran and 6 Olive Egger). I now have 3 hens out of that bunch. 5 hatched, 2 died. DH was not a happy camper. So, I learned to "cushion" the price. For instance, last spring I bought 2 BEAUTIFUL Jersey giant hens. They were 4 months old at the time. (They are awesome). Anywho, when DH asked me how much I paid for them I quickly said "Ten bucks" and then ran off to do something else. He doesn't know it was $10 a piece. They are worth every penny.

If you think any chicken is expensive, check out the website for Greenfire Farms. Cool, but I can't afford them.

The hen might be getting too old??? I read that people cull the hens that keep laying eggs with blood spots. I agree that it has nothing to do with a rooster.  On most egg farms there are no roosters, and there are still blood spot eggs.

Thanks... Good point, I do have some older hen...yet another reason to butcher my old girls

@Outpost JWB thinking of you lots!!

As for supplemental for heat/energy, give them treats with carbs. I know its not nutritionally balanced, but anything with extra carbs helps them create more of their own heat. Especially giving it to them right before roosting time, helps best through the night. Good luck!

believe can happen around when starting laying or coming off a molt as well ...though would make alot of sense if it can be an egg production issue for the egg making parts to cull for it I mean having a chicken thats going to make undesirable eggs or malfunctioning reproductive system you

wouldn't want to continue that hereditary trait

@idiotswife Did anyone come up with something to call you? Idiotswife is a bit long to type out, Idiot seems a bit rude, Wife is a bit of a broad term, so should we just use IW, or what? And did you get Bama watching Madventures already?
