Deb, webasto is a fuel powered heater, usually you can start it with a timer or remote.

Jem, I was going to say Vetericyn, but someone added that already. Vetramil is another great product. Antibiotics I would remove from the list, but that's just me. Did someone say Saline already? Good for washing wounds, among other things.

And last but not least, something to euthanize with, because sometimes it's less cruel.

Ah... about the WEbasto.

WRT euthanization... Scalpel Scissors or a broom handle to break the neck works. With that regard I know how to euthanize all my animals if need be...

Its an important husbandry skill. I have never had to do it. But I know when...

I a friend who was a horse trainer... at the time she was about forty.... She was riding a young colt and something spooked him made him rear and he impaled himself on a Barbed wire post. She baled off but that kind of damage at that time was not recoverable. She flagged down a cop because she didn't have her pistol.

The cop wouldn't Euthanize the colt... so she talked him into allowing her to use his pistol... We are talking 1965 era.... Wayy new rules onboard now. She put the horse down right there.... and thanked the cop. he was stunned. But she had had horses all over the world and had had boarding stables for military families in Africa. She packed a gun then for this very reason.

Deb, I still can't understand when someone calls a vet to put down their horse that has broken it's leg. In a remote place, the wait can be hours, why on earth don't they have a gun for just that reason?

@tntchix , yeah, mine is an ancient xp laptop, can't be reformatted or refurbished.

Oh, and be careful if you get Cream Legbars for blue eggs, verify that the ones you are considering actually lay blue eggs. The standard says blue and green are acceptable and I received some that were green, so I looked it up.

Only time I was glad only one hatched from a batch, lol.

ETA: Very pretty birds!!!

green would be fine too anything other than just browns that I have now.

but yes, I know about that too.

Ahhhh! Oops, got the girls in trouble.....I don't know as much as I would like still. I love the questions, but I'm just not fast enough to research then respond. Glad I could help a little!:)

Everyone here is awesome! We each see things a little differently, is good to get different views from all sides. I also love how everyone takes advice open-minded and makes their own decisions, without condemnation to anyone who does things differently. Seen some threads get ugly when some people are narrow-minded.
So, just wanted to say...
Everyone here is amazing!! Glad to be here! :D

on feeding for the cold:

carbs are great, but watch them, because they can easily lead to lots of fat, like fatty liver disease and shorter life.... and just a waste of feed

fats are actually very good, and transfer less readily to fat (so carbs make you fatter than fat does) and are great at helping them stay warm. So, the suet blocks people put out for the wild birds in the winter are mostly fat, with some carbs added, and they are great.

In the winter I feed my chickens more carbs (simply because all of the garden greens are dead, and they need 'boredom busters' and the easiest one is tossing scratch), but I also feed more fat, like a pan of pellets covered in bacon grease.

For what you need to store in a chicken shed:
- chicken hook (that long thing that looks like a shepherd's hook, to help catch them)
- bunch of different size feeders and waterers
- one chick heater
- dog crates (but maybe better to store them elsewhere)
- at least 3 kinds of feed (chick, flock grower, layer, or what have you)
- oyster shell
- grit (if your ground freezes solid or your animals don't free range
- strong spade and BBQ scraper/brush (to scrape poop off of perches and pry out frozen poop sheets from poop shelves etc.)
- kitty litter scoop (to clean out sand or poop shelves)
- rake (to clean debri out of run)
- pitch fork (to toss deep bedding)
- shovel (to get rid of deep bedding)
- stack of 5, 5 gallon feed buckets, used for seed sprouting, fermenting feed, poop hauling, everything
- a couple 5 or 6 gallon water jugs for water hauling
- some kind of water heater/de-icer (I use a stock tank de-icer that is safe to put on rubber and to run dry)

hummmm, I think that is it

@vehve dude, a three day acupuncture course makes you qualified to stick needles into people? I would be so terrified that I would run away from home.

@tntchix
You don't know what band it was huh? Black shirt...big red heart, crown of thorns, heart bleeding..... Sheesh, I actually went to the concert. hummmmm I remember going to a Jethro Tull concert... don't think that would be their kind of shirt though

Sad.... can't remember my own life.

First Aid Kit:
I just let them die if they look sick, or kill them if they look sick and uncomfortable

However, there are a few things that I will doctor, and some odd things that I keep on hand

sterile suture kit (needle and thread), I bought that after having to sew a chicken together with a regular sewing needle and cotton thread. The cotton thread worked fine, and I steralized the needle first with fire, then soaked the needle and thread in vodka, but WOWSERS, it turns out that sewing needles are about as sharp as butter knives, and I had a bunch of stitches to do on that chicken! (A Bald Eagle had landed on her, but I scared the eagle off, and she was still alive)

locking foreceps actually, I use those suckers for EVERYTHING. I love them, can't have enough of them.

dog crates, water and feed holders to go on the dog crate door. I have a great many dog crates, many different sizes. All are old, and rusty, but they work.

Hydrogen pyroxide it does a good job of washing off every trace of blood.

Shriners Herbal Spray I bought it for my horses, but it works well on everything under the sun. It is an all natural, but FUNCTIONAL anti-fungal and anti-bacterial, help it heal thing.

To stop bleeding I just use pantry stuff, flour or corn starch and pressure. If it were bad, you could always crush it closed with the locking forceps. You smash closed and twist the ends of capillaries to get them to stop bleeding.

To pep up birds, I just give them honey water or a bit of peanut butter.

I should probably keep super glue around too for smaller wounds, but I just can't keep that 'in stock' at my house, it is used too fast.

Slapping my forehead here.... Superglue.... awesome.
