Deb, I still can't understand when someone calls a vet to put down their horse that has broken it's leg. In a remote place, the wait can be hours, why on earth don't they have a gun for just that reason?
ohh thanks for reminding me been needing to grab a kitty scooop! and great idea for the pirchs wire brush will work great!on feeding for the cold:
carbs are great, but watch them, because they can easily lead to lots of fat, like fatty liver disease and shorter life.... and just a waste of feed
fats are actually very good, and transfer less readily to fat (so carbs make you fatter than fat does) and are great at helping them stay warm. So, the suet blocks people put out for the wild birds in the winter are mostly fat, with some carbs added, and they are great.
In the winter I feed my chickens more carbs (simply because all of the garden greens are dead, and they need 'boredom busters' and the easiest one is tossing scratch), but I also feed more fat, like a pan of pellets covered in bacon grease.
For what you need to store in a chicken shed:
- chicken hook (that long thing that looks like a shepherd's hook, to help catch them)
- bunch of different size feeders and waterers
- one chick heater
- dog crates (but maybe better to store them elsewhere)
- at least 3 kinds of feed (chick, flock grower, layer, or what have you)
- oyster shell
- grit (if your ground freezes solid or your animals don't free range
- strong spade and BBQ scraper/brush (to scrape poop off of perches and pry out frozen poop sheets from poop shelves etc.)
- kitty litter scoop (to clean out sand or poop shelves)
- rake (to clean debri out of run)
- pitch fork (to toss deep bedding)
- shovel (to get rid of deep bedding)
- stack of 5, 5 gallon feed buckets, used for seed sprouting, fermenting feed, poop hauling, everything
- a couple 5 or 6 gallon water jugs for water hauling
- some kind of water heater/de-icer (I use a stock tank de-icer that is safe to put on rubber and to run dry)
hummmm, I think that is it![]()
And what if you're going to eat the horse? Can't do it at home either? Weird laws.

Picky people. Better than store eggs.
outpost, just BOSS before bed as a snack on cold nights

@idiotswife Did anyone come up with something to call you? Idiotswife is a bit long to type out, Idiot seems a bit rude, Wife is a bit of a broad term, so should we just use IW, or what? And did you get Bama watching Madventures already?
oh silly me. I use em inside.I was showing the boot trays because they can be used as POOP trays.
LOL.
