I got to have green .

Those middle states like Tennessee , the Carolinas, Georgia, etc, get oppressively hot. It's like a suffocating heat. Most late afternoons here on Florida west coast we get an afternoon breeze. I can deal with 90 and breezy, and go ride my horse. But 93 and still, no way. So I went to visit my horse and cleaned some tack.
 
@perchie.girl that is a lot of rock. Do houses in your area have basements or are they generally just built on slab?

Most California homes are built on slabs... or elevated a bit off the ground for a very small crawl space... Mine is a combo of the two.

Its a combination of Earthquake codes as well as very little of Southern California has snowy winters.

An insulated shed might be an option... I know you really can't dig a true cellar, but if you insulate enough and can get a setup for maybe water cooling in it, that *might* work...

lol... I'm smack dab in the middle of TN... love it here, but yeah, the heat sucks... :/
