ty.. ohh new babies!!!!

I am gonna have to start covering my eyes when I get on BYC.... hatching fever is starting to get me. :duc

I am managing to hold back... I keep reminding myself that I can't house another breed... Unless I build another coop, and I have no idea where I would stick another one. :idunno

But..... The pair of spitz that I got (free eggs from someone, I only had to pay shipping), have close to zero crest! :hit we have always wanted spitz, and you can only get the white with black spots from the hatcheries... These are black-ish. Anyway, they are SWEET birds, and all I have... But how can I breed them if their crests are so close to zero? :idunno looking at them, I just can't imagine, even if I hatch out every single egg this one girl lays, that I will get even a horrible crest.... I guess I could just try anyway.... And if they are all duds, just toss them in with my EE flock.

Hummm, think, think, thunk. I guess I will do that... The little pullet, Java, did start laying early, which is a good genetic feature..... Yep, try them out this one season and see if a crest is hiding in their genetics.

OK... But that means I am going to be stuck with a BUNCH of little batches of chicks... Where will I raise the buggers!?!?!?!?

Clearly thinking out loud. -hummmmmm-

@RavynFallen

I have heard that the nicest call ducks need help hatching (beak too short).... Do yours have any issues? They sure are cute.

Yep... gotta do some assisting, but it's worth it... and I never pull them out, they gotta finish on their own... I only help if they get truly stuck... :)

X2

I believe I saw a lot of debate over the cresting genes... they may each only carry a single copy, so you might get 25% uncrested, 25% full crests, and 50% small crests... but I could very well be wrong, lol... I'd test hatch to see before scrapping them... :confused:

Alaskan -- I feel your pain....and your fever! I'm sitting on my hands lest I purchase eggs, and I truly have no spare room for chicks or extra chickens right now.

AmberJem -- It's just yard cleanup. We had a freeze that pretty much put the perennials to the ground with a wilt, so lopping off and deadheading stuff. Also piles of leaves need to be dealt with. I got about 2 trash containers full and then just lost interest and decided to go inside and vacuum instead. Wish I felt more productive, but I just feel nonfocused.
