Dixie Chicks

Chicknapping hen! I put fertile eggs under one hen who was dedicated in sitting fourteen days. On day 15 I found her Aunt Bonnie Blue and Black Broody BOTH sitting the same nest of 10 eggs. I removed the intruder. ...days passed, more stuff ensued. Today I went out and heard cheeps coming from beneath Aunt Bonnie, and Black broody was again three nests down siting infertile eggs.

I am having to sit on my hands not to lift the huge English Orp hen who appropriated the eggs (and the resulting chicks.) I want to see...how many and which eggs hatched. I want to put some of them under Black Broody tonight. That can't be good to interrupt, but it is hard not to. Is there any chance Bonnie will co-parent the chicks with Black Broody? What would happen if I stole chicks from the chick thief?

Five 1/2 plastic barrels are brimming over with STRAWBERRY plantings!

Well so far the score is 35 strawberries planted...got the taters (not ready anyhoo), the asparagus, blackberry, raspberry, ferns still to go. Thinkin' will get the blackberry and ferns potted on up.

Fabric cloth put in to inhibit grass in the half barrels -
Domestic strawberries do not compete well with grass

Inspectin' the quality of the dirt...Samples taken, passed the testing

Taters are chitting out in the Man Porch...bring them inside each evening...still chance of frost...

Got half the tater patch tilled up with composted turkey poo and oat strawed...half done up

Sweetgrass Turkey Flock

Girls are being good stock dogs...what they dunna know is our turkey flock looks to the dogs as "turkey leaders" and run after the dogs...very easy to move about, but dogs must know the turks will swarm them. Hee hee... Look out for turkeys...be warned...swarmers...buzz buzz

Sweetgrass flock swarming them dogs

Good pups though...they are holding their ground and blocking the entrance of the turkey pen. Holding their own so to speak.

So to beat the heat...got stuff cooked up this morn for macaroni salad, some scrambled eggers for dog din additions (girls jest luv them eggs!), and potato salad (using up the bounty of pullet eggs we're being inundated with right now). Running short of the grocery for completion, so gonna haul the dogs (stop for vanilla ice cream...wonder who likes that part of the trip bestest?) and ourselves to town after my p.m. run and buy up the rest of the fixings. Should be good not heating up the house and Man Porch BQing...hotdogs and beef steak out defrosting...bring on the fun times with warm weather.

Half Whiskey Barrel with fish and waterplant friendly liner

Rick asked me if I was gonna put some small fishies in the half whiskey barrel...hadn't thought about it but got just the right excuse. Kid flipped me $20 in an early M-Day card and that should jest about cover it.

Hope you all are busy busy enjoying the ongoing joys of the season.

I know they can co-parent.... But no way to know if your two will want to, or if they will get all crazy and murderous.

I know... I hate the risk, so :fl for you.

Just a quick pop in. 95 pullets gone, 4 Pekin ducklings gone, 14 Ancona ducklings gone,5 Ancona ducklings leaving tomorrow, and 7 adult ducks leaving tomorrow! Whew! Free time maybe now!
