Almost a year later... After building my new coop, my pen is up

After years of frozen eggs, I asked hubby to put the nestbox inside instead of juting out. I asked for it to be level of perch bar. He says but honey the baby chicks will fall out. I said they will not get pooped on when setting. So he did. We collected eggs this past winter and since the nest boxes were inside, they were not frozen like the other houses. About chicks falling out? Nonsense. That is why I have the pole building for the the broody hens to live in for a week while they lay eggs for hatching.

:clap awesome!

By the way, the lattice will keep big ones out from under the building, but not little ones. I made mine for big ones, then had an unexpected broody, and her babies went underneath, I only had welded wire there. Wished I had added a layer of chicken wire also. Just something to consider....

Yup I have some more work to do for sure... I have to go around the whole perimeter with something baby bird proof. And if I really want to keep my muscovy in I'll need to put a roof or something on top... I watched a mama fly over today after her ducklings poped threw the fence.
I'm still going to free range but a pen is a great asset if I need to go away or have a predator or the prowl.

All of the people that manage to free range ... ... I would loose them all in a week.

Talking of... I was down to 3 old girls, single combed production white leghorns... I think
I am loosing one... Internal laying I think..... -sigh-

I should realy off her right now since I am going to the dump this morning........ Don't wanna.....

I lost a free ranger last week, but it was in the run at the time. Have a dusk to dawn auto door. Found it inside the run, head pulled thru the fence. But haven't lost nearly as many as I figured I might, when we installed the auto door. ETA sorry about the leghorn Alaskan. Hope it works out for the best.
