Thanks Hen
I lost a free ranger last week, but it was in the run at the time. Have a dusk to dawn auto door. Found it inside the run, head pulled thru the fence. But haven't lost nearly as many as I figured I might, when we installed the auto door. ETA sorry about the leghorn Alaskan. Hope it works out for the best.
Wonder what ate yours.... Hummmm too many possibilities. I hope it doesn't come back. I am STILL taking my bantam wheaten ameraucana and having him sleep in the house every single night.....

Probably a coon. We've caught a few.... and one since we lost that girl.

Would love to see that little Am. Got any pics?

Went out to a friend's party dinner tonight. Reservations at 7:30pm. Resturant was SO SLOW! Took an hour and 1/2 to get chicken strips. Our chickens free range every day. They of course would not go up before I left for the resturant. So, I was nervouse during the whole time & the drive home felt way too long! Thankfully everyone appears to be ok. A more thorough check will be done tomorrow.

@hennible looks great!

Totally feel that panic! Glad everything looks OK.

Predators leave mine alone knock on wood. This fall I'll be fencing in my whole garden area 70'x80' approximately using bird netting from Lowe's or Home Depot can't remember which I got it from. It comes in 7'x100' length, and cheap. Will be running a couple strands of electric wire around it for any stray dogs or predators. Only risk will be hawks.

I use 20 lb test line to make the top of our runs

I used that successfully in one of my pens. Only bad thing, put it by a tree. Had to keep up with the leaves falling and laying on it in the fall & snow and ice gathered on it making it sag and tear. It's cheap enough though. Not something that I would consider predator proof, but sure helps. We will be using some back at the run this year. Next year, free ranging will be only at the back of the property. The chickens have managed to eat every blueberry, strawberry, raspberry, tomato, green pepper that they see growing.

@ beercan: I've used that netting for fencing, and the trouble here is that rodents easily make "entrance" and "exit" holes chewing right through without even slowing down much, and soon as you repair the holes they chew another.

@JWB Ditto on my free ranging chickens eating stuff. I managed to get a nice harvest after netting the blueberries where they couldn't even get under them, , but they got the tomatoes as soon as they ripened here. :(
