Dixie Chicks

Beautiful roses, amber.

Outpost, some people really have strange ideas about some things. It only goes to prove that they are way too far removed from their food sources.

We occasionally get someone on our thread who you can't convince that you do not have to heat your coop, and ventilation is the #1 priority. Last yr someone insisted it was cold, brutal, wasn't taking any chances... It never got below 20 last winter, it was below zero for most of the previous two winters with down to -20 to -30 below zero windchill.

Beautiful roses amber. I tried to send text with the pics yesterday but for some reason pics went, text didn't. I'm alive and well. Been busy keepi g the farm going and working. Got lots of grow out this year and not battling with coccidiosis like we used to. Incubator is shut off for now. I may hatch more leghorns if they keep it up but for now I'm done.

How's everyone been doing? I've been checking in every so often and trying to skim and catch up but I never seem to have enough time to get all the way through.

A few pics of my chocolate babies. Its appearing as if I might have 6 male, 4 female.

The 3 barred males all look a little different.

Yeah.... And then their coop burns down.

I also notice that those are the people that are perpetually treating their flock because their flock is perpetually suffering from respiratory ailments.

Minihorse, good to see you!

I had a bunch of grow-outs and the vast majority were stealthily being eaten before I noticed. After that a weasel got in to two of my coops... Right after I had decided to not keep any backup bantam wheaten ameraucana cockerels... The one I had was stunning... So yep, I got rid of all the rest and Mr. Stunning was killed by the weasel.

I scrambled, and all of the cockerels that I had given away had already been butchered .... Except for one. That one was given back to me, he isn't yet in full adult feather, so I am not sure how good he will be. The day of the weasel attack the girls had laid two eggs before they were killed... Those two eggs are cockerels...

Anyway, my original (now all dead) quad had consisted of excellent specimens, and it was interesting to see how few of the chicks are even slightly close to the quality of their parents. :idunno

The pullets from the quad were not lost (they were in different pens), but I sold most... Really only one is any good.

I do have a nice set of Spitz to breed from, and an up-and-coming dark brown leghorn cockerel that is looking good, only one Dominique pullet but she looks good, she laid her first egg today.

I still have milk goats (got them in February), but added one high quality milking kid, and a free snuggle buddy for her.

@Alaskan

I made the mistake of telling people I knew someone who lived in Alaska who didn't heat his coop. It wasn't necessary....

I got a new one reamed by someone who lives in Fairbanks.... Claiming that where you lived was much warmer....

The person I was talking to was in Michigan

Yeah... Fairbanks is extreme. I think everyone that lives up there are totally insane...

I do live in a warm part of Alaska, but Kodiak island and south east Alaska are both warmer (and way rainier) than where I am.

Coops in Alaska are great unheated up to, and a little north of Anchorage. That area and further south only dip into -30 or so, and usually not for longer than a week or two. Much past Anchorage, especially as you move inland, it gets way scary cold.... There, if you don't heat the coop it is because it is up against your house to share the house heat.

I only rarely go below zero. :D I have dipped briefly to almost -20, and been down to -10 for a week or two, but that is rare.

well you did say you really wanted a good chocolate male...lol. I have so many roosters I don't know what I'm going to do with them. Should be interesting to see what the barred boys will turn in to. Alaskan, I love the goats! They are awesome. I have read some of the predatory issues you were having. I had lost a few without realizing it due to the extra grow outs in the pen. Made it harder to watch to see if anyone is missing. I can send you brown and Isabel leghorn eggs if you want to try to replace some leghorns.
