Oh my goodness what an admirable quest... I was thinking he might go off to work on a fishing boat ..... but this is far far better.

Yep... In Orthodoxy you can be a married priest, as long as you get married before you are ordained a priest. No single priests finding brides in the congregation...nope.

Still though... To be a priest he is highly encouraged to first get a bachelors degree, and then go to seminary. (You don't need the bachelors, but it is strongly preferred) Seminary is 3 years. After seminary you still don't automatically get to be a priest. You have to apply, have references, the bishop needs to decide you are ready.. Yada yada yada

So it is almost kind of silly to decide at 18 that that is what he wants to do.... But whatever... Goals are important, and I am all for it, just I am also aware that things change pretty rapidly at his age.

Yep change is expected.... but getting out and seeing the life and living it for a time could only be good. as long as you keep your options open... college alone is an eye opener.

Mine went from
Oceanograpy
to
Astronomy
to
Geology
and
Creative writing.

right now hes taking Chemistry and loving it... committed to finishing out with a Geology major and a Creative Writing Minor...

But i wished he was able to take some time out to explore the world first before heading off to college.

I have a friend who when she graduated Highschool her parents bought her a round trip plane ticket to Europe.. and gave her a thousand dollars. Told her to not come back till the money was gone. Her best friends parents did the same... Off they went and they didnt come back for two years.

They wound up working on a kibbutz in Isreal. They had worked their way accross Europe through Italy... shes about four years older than me so they went off in 1969.... different world for sure but something similar would be a good thing

I agree with the exploring bit....

I was such an idiot at 18.... I took off a year before college, and then took off another year in the middle of college.

The time off helped me be a better student and learn more..... But it didn't cure my "idiotness"

It kind of blows me away that my kids are in general so obedient, respectful, and religious..... I keep waiting for some sort of explosion... Keep wondering why it hasn't happened yet.... It kind of freaks me out that it hasn't happened yet..... They ARE my kids.....

Mabe it will just happen a bit later.....

thats super kewl @Alaskan I really enjoyed the time I stayed with the nuns as a kid. that has to be hard and hear ya on feeling ancient time keeps passing.

so the neighbors came over tried to give me one of their roosters, I thanked them but declined, and it started turning up in my yard...... it's found a new home now
