I found the easiest way to reduce spurs is have someone hold him, you hold his leg still, and grab the spur with a pair of pliers. Gently barely twist back and forth and the spur will pop, where it connects to the leg, then it will slide off, like a sheath. There's a smaller, soft spur underneath that will harden in a day or so. Bleeding is minimal, no pain at all to the bird. Easy as pie.

X2!

WV gave me the guts to try it... it's freaky at first and swear it feels like you're gonna break his leg but once it pops it's not bad... I did an at least 3 year old Australorp cock a couple weeks ago... monster spurs!!!

Check this out. I'm squeamish so if I can do it, anybody can

I've done this before but I was trying to leave as much as I could and just take the tip off so it mainly isn't as sharp, plus to help his tripping. I may have to go this route with him if I can't get the end trimmed off. I hate filing...lol

that Swedish flower rooster is one of my first of the breed I had so I believe he is from 2013, so 3, almost 4. He is gentle as can be and loves being held(go figure) so I feel bad he can't walk well.

Aww he's a cutie!

By the way, minihorse, are you going to the Ohio Nationals in a couple of weeks? I going over one day, not sure which day yet. I just want to look around and drool.

The Australorp was same way... sweet as pie... but he fought with one of her other boys and she had to put that one down due to infected injury from those huge spurs... after popping them off, I won't even try clipping or filing... so much easier to just remove...
