Dixie Chicks

Just moved my last chick to the brooder.. The egg was huge compared to the others... Picked him up... Feathered feet... Wait... Feathered feet? It's a brahma cross! Took a minute for me to figure out...

yupp (with a good spoon of salt), and then right into the ice bath (I use snow right now). the small eggs take about 10 minutes to boil hard, larger eggs probably closer to 15 minutes at a boil.

I just had 24 perfectly peeled eggs last night with that method

Do they "make" a round duck with great egg qualities?

Yep,

@Alaskan why do you prefere duck over chicken? I only ask cuz I spent couple decades avoiding most chicken but have started devloping a taste for it the last two years maybe because I didnt OD on it over the years dunno....I had been working in an Indian cuisine place for awhile.. and I had gotten soo overdosed on chicken it wasnt just blek to me..

I knew that about turkeys but are you sure it has to be cornish cross?? and ya turkeys are dumb as a box of rocks...rocks might be smarter...not sure if its a old wives tale or not but have heard turkeys will drown themselves in the rain.........seem to recall my grandfather saying that.. I do wonder if different breed of turkeys might be better then others...
Well, to be honest, all of the chickens that we have processed, have been more on the small size (Haven't ever raised a true meat breed). So chicken is always a bit disappointing... because it is small.... but also the flavor. I like the flavor of the Muscovy better.

The reason that it is easiest t put the turkey babies in with the cornish cross is because the cornish cross eat like CRAZY! Their constant eating helps to encourage the turkeys to eat. Supposedly, because of that, you can put just two little cornish cross chicks in with the 2 or so turkeys and the cornish cross will work their magic!

Agh I love everyone's chicks! I have 4 eggs in the bator and just washed off 2 newly laid eggs to put into the bator tonight.

I have never hatched eggs before and honestly have no idea what I'm doing, I hope ya'lls will help me out?

And I'm about to go make either lemon fritters or lemon pound cake. I'm running low on coffee, so decision making isn't my strong suit atm.

The eggs will have a better chance of hatching if you don't wash them first. If they are super dirty, then yeah, you need to wash them first. However, if you can just flake off the poop/ mud that would be best.

@BriardChickens

I wanted to give you a list of good egg laying ducks... but I am blanking, and the internet isn't being helpful.

However, Khaki Campbells look good, as well as Appleyards.

bahaha, the woman I sit next to swears there is no way to successfully peel a hard boiled egg if it's fresh! Well sorry I just did! "Well then they weren't fresh" oh yeah they were.. no point arguing with her.
