deb,
The only time I've seen black-eyed peas fresh in the store is right around New Year's. You're right, there's nothing like them.
Have you had fresh garbanzo beans / chickpeas? A pain to shell as there's only one or two per pod, but divine when poached for about 15 minutes and cooled.

I like Humus.... But Garbonso beans trigger my texture issues.... I have only had ones from in a can. I most definately would try some that are cooked fresh.

Martha Stewart has a really good recipe for "Spatchcocked Chicken with Chickpeas" where they are roasted. DH raved about it, especially the garbanzos

(I sprinkled a little cumin and salt over them to really pop the flavor)

I spatchcocked some Game fowl for newyears once.... roasted them in the oven on a big cookie sheet... four birds just fit. I wanted to spatchcock the turkey last year... this year I wanted to bone the turkey and truss it around the stuffing... but I am running into resistence for my dining crowd. Mom and grandma want things that are traditional in the family.

My son and I are the Epicurious ones.... sigh... WE had sushi for lunch today....

what do you like with your humus @perchie.girl

I like artechoke humus and any dipping object I can find.... been known to dip a spoon. LOL. I also like garlic hummus.... I used to work on the same block as a hummus manufacturer. He had a store front that was a little deli. So Got to taste all the "new" flavors.... Roasted red pepper hummus was out of this world as a replacement for mayo on roast beef sandwich....

Hey for tomorrows dinner I have planned:

fresh Roasted Beets

Acorn squash roasted with Butter and brown sugar

And Meatloaf made with sourdough bread crubms Lots of onion and garlic and some CrisNPitts barbque sauce....

I found a recipe for roasting beets in the microwave.... Score.... I can do those first and let them finnsh roasting in foil while they rest.

I will start the squash in the microwave till it just starts getting soft.... then score it and sauce it and put it in the oven along with the meat loaf.

Oh and I have buttermilk Mom loves Butter milk....

Hopefully it will be a late lunch early dinner...
