Dixie Chicks

@minihorse927 , That's awesome! Congrats!

@vehve , maybe I'd do ok with pigs. I am the one that butchers all the roosters. DH helped once. Last time I had a terrible experience where the rooster jerked his head and my hatchet was not sharp enough. I won't go into detail, but lets say it was super unpleasant and I am not butchering again until I get a new, sharp hatchet. One that will cut a rock in 1/2.
I thought I would not be able to butcher the rabbits either, but those little farts get big and mean quick. Sometimes they scratch me, bite me, or snort at me. I now think I will be ok butchering them.
I agree with Alaskan that I would send the pigs away for processing. I helped my brother load up his pigs for slaughter one time. We must've chased them for an hour or better.

Took the "cuteness factor" right away!

I must say, the axe method is by far the cleanest kill I've experienced so far. I keep my axe sharp enough to cut paper, and a dropping motion from about 8-12 inches with some added push in it takes the head off cleanly. I lasso the feet in some paracord, and put a noose around the neck, Karin stretches out the neck while I hold the legs, and then I chop off the head. The lasso around the feet can be used to hang the bird to bleed, plus it will stop you from having a headless chicken running around the yard (that is super freaky, don't let the kids see that).

Never heard of the stunner gun. Going to check that out. Rabbits are much more dangerous than chickens. I now have scars from where a rabbit has scratched my arm. Cant wait to fry that one up!

JWB, they look like this. This one is about 55 euros around here, including VAT. I think the brand is Goldhase, but googling that will give you loads of gold wrapped chocolate bunnies.

You arm it by pulling the knob in the end, and you release the spring by pushing the button. This would work fine on chickens too, if you prefer to keep the head attached when processing. Then you just slice the jugular after you've stunned the animal with this.
