If a predator got your quail your chickens probably know something is around and are stressed. That's my guess...

X2, probably around somewhere, keep a eye out! It broke your defensive once, sad to say but it will probably be looking for another fast meal.

You have to find it and kill it IMHO!

Good morning all! Sorry I haven't been posting. I check in now and then, but its been super crazy busy around here. We are up to (I think) 123 chickens. The chicks are getting bigger and there are all kinds of age groups, so being divided makes for more work for us and then reconfiguring housing.

Been working on the house as well. All is going good, but never as fast as we would like.

I need advice on a hen. When DHs dog killed my barred rocks and CCL hens, I got 3 hens at a chicken swap. 1st time ever at a swap. (Lessons learned). I took them home and put them in the quarantine area. I noticed after we got them home that one had heavy raspy breathing and was coughing. I gave them all 3 an antibiotic in their water and went ahead and gave them wormer as well as precautionary measure. I also dusted them with sevin even though I seen no bugs.

The Jersey Giant and the Easter Egger (which was the one coughing & such) got better and I now have them out with the flock. They are doing great. The barred rock-however-is not doing well. She is still in the quarantine pen and I had separated her from the other 2 because she was acting odd. She has no signs of respiratory, but she will not eat or drink much at all. She must be eating something, because I have had them for weeks now. She sits or stands with her tail down. She does not try to get out of the cage, just seems very lethargic. Her poop looks normal. I have not given her anything different from the other 2. I am most afraid she may have Marek's or Newcastle. I don't want to medicate her if not necessary. I am thinking about culling her. Whatever the problem, I don't want it to spread to the flock. What do you think?

"My" fox comes back pretty often, my Aussie dog runs it off every time. The thing is my fox has only been out during the day, and if it's around at night my pen and coop are fox proof, large predator proof in general. Now a Weasle could take out my flock no problem...

Put a slip cover on the chair... its easy to do. Or buy some acutal night stands... You know something you can put a lamp or an alarm clock on Or even a couple of book shelves made the same manner as the head board. Painted the same color. Id also put some nice pillows with a colors that matched both the head board and the bed clothes.

Deb, I'll make shelves later, lights we'll add to the headboard. The chair is a local antique design classic with a beautiful oak finnish, I don't want to hide it. We need something to tie the room together, pillows might do the trick.

Someone told me of a problem they were having with chicken eating eggs. They said they had a problem last year and got rid of most or a lot or all not sure, because their entire flock were eating their own eggs.

They have started over with new chickens from many different places and they have the problem starting again and he told me of all types of feed he is giving his chickens. Sounds like they are all eating well, by what he says.
I tried To help with diggestions as to what causes this. Just think of what was happening.
My hubby even suggested it may be a mouse that is causing problems.
If anyone can think of some solution to add or possible weakness please feel free to add. I fact I welcome anyones and everyones input as we all Learn from others.
I personally have never experinced this type of problem. Never. If I see a cracked egg laying under a perch I remove it. I make sure there are many nest boxes. What a terrible feeling for a girl to want to lay her egg and the box is full of another chicken sitting.

Causes of egg eating
Not enough protien
Not enough calcium
not dark enough nest box

For what its worth I have seen one hen lay an egg on top of another.
