Evening All. I will never cease to be amazed with chicken behaviors....tonight the new mom and her two chicks "went to roost" in the big coop like they'd done it forever....interestingly, "mama hen" when up the ladder in her usual place in the pecking order...about in the middle of the flock..with the little ones fluttering in behind her. I have not looked to see if there was "back out of the coop" behavior tonight. This great brood hen wants to teach her chicks to free range...and I am amazed at her patience and skills and what she is cleverly teaching those to chicks. I really, really hope they make it to become part of the flock....one is a purebred "Americauna" and the other, a black possibly barred, chick,...is a barnyard mix.

Last night we got home from the grocery & it was DARK out. I had put the 5 chicks and the broody in a small fence around their doghouse which I pulled out of the coop so they could enjoy picking in the grass, bugs, flying around a bit, etc. Well, DD and I ran back as soon as we got home. There were all gone. Everyone of them. DD started immediately crying. I tried to remind her of our broody last year that took her babies to a tree one night and went up so high I couldn't believe it. Anyway, we looked around everywhere & finally found them all safe and sound in a corner outside the main coop.

I love watching the broodies lead their babies and teach them. We were giving them earth worms yesterday and she was clucking and clucking and telling them what to do. So cute.

This morning it is pouring down rain by the buckets outside. GREAT

and the winds are crazy! I looked out there and there are twigs from the trees blown up on the back deck, the greenhouse looks like its going to blow over. I ran out there to check on King Tut (CCL roo I got from @minihorse927 ). He free ranges all day & I don't cage him up at night. So there he was, roosting on top of his old cage inside the greenhouse. Winds are whipping and rain is pouring in. His feathers are blowing every which way and he just stands there fighting it. Crazy roo! I put him in his old cage, but left the door open for him. He is such a good rooster. He won't let any of the other roosters cross his imaginary line in the yard. If they do, he quickly chases them back to the back area. Funny.

@seminolewind , Never seen anything like that. I looked at cancer as a possibility, but none of the pics looked like that. Keep us updated. I wouldn't think Maraks as someone else mentioned, only because I think they would pop like a fever blister. But idk. Interesting.

@hennible , r You have inspired DD and me to start digging our pond. We started yesterday. It was 90F out and we were pouring sweat when we got done. Only got a little done, but I'm in no hurry. When I showed DD (9 years old), what you did, she said "If Hennible can do it then we can do it!" Thanks for the push

.

I'd better get ready for work. Rain has lessened, but winds are still whipping. You all have a great day!

@Outpost JWB I am super happy that you found mama and her babies! That rooster always did sleep out in the rain even when he had free option of the barn or the run. I have not seen any rain here yet but there are trees twigs everywhere like the wind has been blowing pretty good sometime tonight and there is lightening off in the distance. I hate to say it but I hope there is some rain on its way, my cistern is low.
