DIY Thread - Let's see your "Inventions".

On my bucket feeder............ If you have chickens that still make a mess, you could add a piece of 3" pvc pipe to the opening where they stick their head in to make it so that their head has to go a bit farther in and also will close the hole just a bit (the thickness of the 3" pvc pipe).

Also to prevent mold (or old food from around the bottom not being eaten), I just shook my bucket a bit before I filled it and then I added 1/2 more food, shook again, then I topped it off. I figure that mixed the remaining food enough.

I have one hen making a mess with it. I was going to not cut as much off the next pipe and see if that helps. the video on YouTube he had to add a guard to the front. he cut a plastic lid about a 1/3 and glued it to the opening. that stopped it from coming out when they shake their heads in the feed.

The bucket feeders are quite neat. I have 13 birds, we just use one of those goat/dog bowls, with a big rock in the middle to prevent them tipping it. I don't *think* we lose too much feed this way, so far... I do like the bucket tube ideas tho... I think if I had to, I would definitely make one. I do have a normal tray under bucket style galvanized feeder- they hate it, and make more mess with it, it seems, and they complain when they have to work or get the tiny bits out. Lazy birds!

Perchie.girl,
I just heard a pod cast about handedness. They said left-handers have better spacial perception (and better hemisphere communication within their brains) and more engineers are left handed than the general population. So...are you a righty or a lefty? Just curious. Sorry off topic.

instead of the plastic bottle for the waterer you buy for the brooder i bought the waterer base and then used a mayonnaise jar... it holds more water too

I am Ambidextrous.... Not to the point where I can write with both but almost everything else it doesnt matter. I can read mirror writing and upside down writing too. I do have a problem with dyslexia sometimes.... But I think thats more about not taking time.

I think spacial ability has more to do with being able to think in three dimensions. Sculpting and creating with your hands inhances those abilities. I have always drawn, sculpted, built things.... one of my best teachers for working with sheet metal was taking a sewing class in high school... Cutting out patterns and sewing things together to essentially make a three dimensional object. Those same skills apply.

My dad was always building prototypes and scale model planes .... Complete with fabric wings... I helped him on many occasion. Then when we were ready for our very first color TV back in 1969, he bought a Heathkit and the both of us built a color TV. He taught me resistor code and called out a resistor and I would pull it from the kit.... Oh and he was definately Ambidexterous too.
