Ah, I see. Thought they didn't lay until after weaning.

They can go into lay prior to weaning. They wean before brooding another clutch. Typically, lay does not start until after weaning, but when hen in really good weight with my birds, they can go back into lay first. They have some flexibility according to nutritional status.

This stuff holds more true for my American Games. Some other keeping American Games have claimed never seen what I report. Thus examination would have very limited focus.

That's okay, it's still interesting. It's teaching me to observe my own birds more closely as individuals. I feel I read dogs pretty well, cats somewhat; chicken behavior is still very new to me. People ... eh. Lol.

This story did not end well. Fox, probably a Red Fox. I showed kids signs indicating fox as we checked her roosting location where captured and what we could deduce for other observations. She and chick were only ones out at night so repeat not likely, but I want young birds out later. We are going to get it.

I am not sure he knows beyond Love Heart and chick not showing up. We will pull a pullet from barn in next couple days to try again with the up graded nest. Next round we will be putting pen over broody with chicks to reduce odds of such a loss. Pullet will not have a history being a broody, but should still do fine.

The other hen (Blue) that hatched chicks on same day will be penned next to sire of her chicks starting tomorrow evening. Intent their is to get that bullstag (Tap) to go full on broody. That social group will be used for a demonstration in June when chicks are about 4 weeks old.

We are going to give this a second go with a different couple. Hen recovered from a brood earlier in year and rooster well into eclipse molt.
