Do fear of bedbugs stop you from buying used iteams.

Here in NY everyone is worried about bedbugs. Does that stop you from shopping thrift stores?

Not yet, but it would if I ever brought home bedbugs.

Nope

. The only item that I know of that you can not get rid of bed bugs (without professionals) is the matteress itself. All other bed items (Blankets, sheets, pillows, pillow cases) I just wash in really hot water to kill anything. It's worked so far! No bed bugs, fleas, or lice.

Well.. sort of..
I'd never buy a used mattress .. and i'm even leary of buying used couches ..etc...
Ya just never know... i dont want to introduce bed bugs or mites or fleas to my house...
I have bought used blankets before.(good will store..).. but i used them for pet blankets... and i washed them in scalding hot water before i let my pets use them.
Bed bugs are no joke... once you get them.. they are SO SO hard to get rid of... regular bug spray dosent kill them... thats why people are so leary of getting them...

No bedbugs and dust mites aren't the same. Dustmites eat dead skin that we slough off as Wolfwoman said, but bedbugs are entirely different and actually bite us for our blood while we sleep and can get horribly out of control. They are easily transported from place to place, such as from hotel rooms or kid's sleepovers. I am the Manager of a Pest Control Company and they can take several treatments to get rid of. They hide in cracks and crevices or in the seams of your mattress and come out at night to feed. Now having said all that, it still doesn't deter me from buying second hand, with the exception of mattresses because they can just live too long in a mattress.

If I understand it right, bed bugs have gotten worse because hotels aren't allowed to use a spray to kill the bugs...not sure how acurate that is...... but I'd never buy a used mattress. I would furniture if I knew the person it was coming from.

i have bought used mattresses. My children are the only ones who have beds right now that were bought new. We got married very young and had to get what we could.However we have never had a problem bringing anything home. The worst thing was a box of fabric i got at an auction had fabric worms in it.. eating it good thing it only cost $1!


Anyways, i always make sure i check out ANYTHING i am buying from a thrift store( love em) and i used to work at a salvation army--- they are required by law to spray down the mattresses with industrial something or other to sanitize them. Its been some years since i worked there, but i do know that there is a conditioning put in place.


Its always a good idea to vacuum them and steam clean them once you get them.


I watched a hoarders show where they had a bedbug infestation.. i do not believe the dust mites are the same as bedbugs?
