Love to see a hawk mess with a badaz wild tom.. i think the hawk would get its clock cleaned..

I hunt to and never seen a hawk ever go after a full grown 11 to 23+ lb wild turkey..or my own decoys... however i seen red tails sit in tree's while Wild hens and poults forage in the local farm fields here. never seen one taken in front of me..

pheasants what are left around here fall victim to red tail and great horned owls, esp when hunting clubs release in the fall months there are alot of juveniles looking to eat....

I always thought the same, no Redtail would go after a full grown turkey, but experience has taught me first hand. Last year while turkey hunting, I had my stuffed hen decoy in a field with a plastic decoy jake. While sitting and waiting or the turkeys to show up, I catch sight of a Redtail Hawk diving in from the right and smack my stuffed hen! I jumped up and ran the hawk off before it did more damage than it already had. Now granted this was a stuffed non- moving bird and the hawk was probably sittting high in a tree assessing the situation,. A non -moving turkey was an abnormal turkey. Easy meal for a hawk! Weather they can catch a healthy hen is questionable, but it didn't hesitate to hit something as big as itself. Now, a full grown gobbler would be highly unlikely.

you must have some big red tails there.."most here" aren't that big to mess with turkeys, however I'm sure it does happen on rare occasions, some i don't think will take the risk of being injured by a large turkey...

however we have bald eagles and a few osprey also that pass through here....i know the grouse population here suffers from red tails and great horned owls.

heck hawk mountain Sanctuary is only a few miles from us..at one time thats were hunters would go back in the old days to hunt hawks and birds of pray..
check it out..lots of learning pages on hawks here and there habits and identifications

If a hawk is hungry enough he'll even go after deer! There's video on youtube of a hawk taking down a deer, it's actually pretty cool. My turkey free ranges all day everyday from 6 am to 8 pm with our ducks, she goes right in the pen and roosts at dusk! She's very smart, and loveable cuz when we get home she runs to us! Well my husband brings her fresh fruits & veges from work everyday so that may have a little to do with it, lol.

But back on subject, we have 4 regular red tails, & they even have a nest about a football fields length away from our house. Owl we have too, but never no problems from either.
That was a golden eagle in that vid. MUCH larger than any chicken hawk.

There is a good video on youtube of a hen wild turkey running off a red tail that tried to take one of her poults
Also a kewl vid of a golden eagle attacking a wild tom.

I will grant you that the head of the eagle is a bit light in the vid, but judging by the wing and tail patterns, it is most assuredly a golden eagle, possibly a juvenile. You have to admit, that tom has some killer dodging skills!
