The predators around our place have a hard time with the .22 or the 12 gauge with turkey shot! If they are killing my animals I don't want to take them somewhere else to let them kill someone's animals.

Most raccoons will be hounded to death and killed if you drop them off in another raccoon's territory.

yeah, but I don't want to take that chance. I've see people at the end of my driveway letting critters go out of traps. I suppose they figure the woods across the driveway with the ponds will be a good home for them.

But I've also had dogs, cats, baby squirrels, chickens (not a predator though) and all sorts of critters "dumped" here. I am sort of fed up with people's attitude like oh well, lets trap it and move it to somewhere else where they will deal with it.

Relocating raccoons is believed to be a major cause of the rabies spread years ago. Kind hearted, but naive, people think they are doing the animal favor by driving a few miles away and dumping. Relocating is just a pretty word for dumping. Most predators are territorial. Territories can only support a certain number. Dumped predators either starve, get killed by the current population or have to kill someone in the existing population. They carry diseases into the new territory and are exposed to diseases that they may have little resistance to. It's funny that many people insist that when they get a new chicken it should have a 30 day quarantine, but the same person might think nothing of just dumping a raccoon 20 miles away. Dumping any animal, domestic or wild, is bad. It might make the dumper feel better, but it isn't doing any thing good for anyone else

I realize that some may get upset, but......... If you are going to make statements that "not only is it illegal" or "in most juridictions" , please present a work cited post as well. A "work cited" post is one that tell us where you got your information to verify your statement.

I just took the time to check the NYS DEC web site and only found information that it is illegal to transplant shell fish. ( www.dec.ny. gov.) part 45. This was by no means an extensive search for an answer.

Lets remember that you are presenting "legal" information. The fact that you are upset that someone dumped a predator in your lap is another matter. While it may be poor neighbor relations it may or may not be illegal.

I myself have trapped and dumped many squirrels along the Erie Canal Park. I admit I would not be pleased if someone dumped a raccon in my back yard. I'll with hold my method of dealing with these things.

ok, from your own nys DEC website you "Cited"

http://www.dec.ny.gov/docs/wildlife_pdf/08guidefurbr.pdf

Check on Page 3 for this info below.....

DEFINITION OF TRAPPING
To trap means to take, kill or capture wildlife with traps, deadfalls and
other devices commonly used to take wildlife, including the shooting or
killing of lawfully trapped animals. It also includes all related activities
such as placing, setting, staking or checking traps or assisting another
person with these activities. You do not need a hunting license to shoot
a trapped animal.

and before you go off on a tizz that it says captures wildlife and box traps are allowed, yes they are... see page 5........ with foothold clamps inside.

Works sited all nice and neat. I can find this info out for anyone else. Who is interested?

When weighing my options on how to deal with Rocky, I considered relocating, but there was NO WAY he was getting into my car, even in a cage. N.o. w.a.y.
