Animal relocation.

I prefer to deter as well, that's why I use dogs instead of traps and guns, but a 50lb raccoon, hanging around the house, that sucker would have to go bye bye. I think you should get your trapper friend over there ASAP, before you, your pets or neighbors get hurt.

I can't even envision the size trap that would be needed. I have a small one that can be used for cats and regular size raccoons but not fatso. We laughed when we looked at the trap. I don't even think it's head could fit..lol

Have you tried contacting your city or county? A 50lb raccoon living in a residential neighborhood is not a simple pesky wildlife issue, that's a health hazard.

You wouldn't typically try using a "cage" type trap for a raccoon that size. If you have a trapper friend they will know the best way to catch it once they are on location, but likely a larger coil spring trap.

They would tell you to call a wildlife trapper. The state/city doesn't deal with wildlife.

That's unfortunate, they do here. One day someone driving down our road called about a disoriented looking raccoon on the roadside in front of our property. Animal control was here in no time to collect it. A neighbor called about an injured opossum in their yard and they even responded to that. I had to call once about a fawn that got stuck in our fence. I cut the fence and got him free, but sadly it already had a dislocated hip. They came and picked that up as well, within about 15 minutes... and I live in a rural area.

I think right now my neighbor is having more problems with her then anyone else. He feeds the feral cats and she likes the cat food. He shoots her with a pellet gun, but it doesn't phase her. I almost think it makes her more angry. I'm going to send a message to the trapper guy to see what he suggests. The babies are young enough that they might fall for a regular trap.

So here in Michigan this is what the hunting and trapping digest say.
Racoon and coyote may be taken on private property by property owner or designee all year if they are doing or about to do damage. A liscence or written permit is not needed.
I do not relocate anything that invades my immediate yard area. I practice the three S's
I had one neighbor who had trouble with racoon and would catch them in his live trap. Put them in the back of his pickup and drive about 1/4 of a mile accross a river and release them. He did not think racoons could swim.i think he was catching the same coon over and over again, the thing was half tame by the end of the year, and well fed by all the tuna he baited the trap with.
I had another accuatiance who had trouble with red squirels and would live trap them. He would drive them a couple miles away on some state land and release them. It seamed the more he did this the more red squirels he had in his bird feeders. So one day he spray painted the tail of one of them florescent orange, put in his truck and drove it away about ten miles and let it go. In three days the orange tailed red squirell was back in his feeder.
I dont go looking for trouble (i own 98 acres) but if critters come within my yard area, first they have to contend with my dogs, then me.
I live here, pay the land taxes, and i enjoy my free range chickens during the day. I give the wildlife 97 acres unmolested. The 2 acres of my house barn and yard are off limits.
The racoon is now an invasive species in Tibet creating great havic there, and our red fox is an invasive species introduced from europe.
Neither of these are on the endangered species list.
Coyotes who were primarily a western canine are now coast to coast and from south America to the artic. They are interbreeding with domestic dogs and wolves.
AMEN !!!

What I find interesting (is the word I’ll use) is that the people apossed to dispatching a animal humanely have never done it or faced their animals/livestock being killed. They have no idea of the “scope” of the problem. I suppose they would stand up for the rights of rats too.
