I am in the same boat as alot of you guys..People dump their problems on our property alot.

And then I have to take care of them or husband does.
Not so much the raccons or bunny rabbits or whatnot.. morealong the lines of cats and dogs and the occasional goat or horse.

When it comes to other wildlife.. the ones that get into teh garbage or go after my stock.. well then its lights out..sorry.
People dont think.. thats the problem. They think... .awwh ..cute possum lets take it back into the woods.. nice !!

Oh and catchin ga raccon in life trap? you ever seen a pi$$ed off raccon in a cage? they will turn a 4 sided cage into a roll. I dont care if they where here first .. I am apex.. I own this land .They need to just relocate themselfs.

I have something to add to the predator and birds in cages. CHicken can fly.. albeit a short distance. They would be alot safer at night on a tree roosting than in a cage where they cant get away.At least outside they have a chance to get a way or fly onto a tree .. even if its just a small one..
Just something to think about.

Well this has been a very interesting thread. Yep relocation is bad for both the animal and those it may get dumped near.

Where have all the trappers gone? Get the prices back up and I will drag the Victor double springs back out.

Bobcat this year was selling for 125.00 for a premium hide. I was getting that for coon back in '78 and 50 for Coyote. I could go out and take ten Coyote every weekend during the season and that would be equal to four hard months at a fast food joint.

I know this is off topic but not really. Taking predators out of the wild will make for a healthy population that can feed themselves on what they can find in the woods. There will be less competition and the predators can have a larger range to hunt on and more prey animals to hunt.

I think the last decade or 2 furs have gone out of fashion, and wearing them is associated with Cruellia de Ville in the minds of ladies under a certain age. I have a closet full of leather, but for many people that doesn't have the stigma of a fur.

I always thought Cruella de Ville had superb fashion sense.

I was referring more to her love of furs, and I never quite understood the anti fur movement, or why they never seemed to think to apply the same reasoning to leather. You can either have a wasted dead animal, or a dead animal plus some fabulous fur. And nope, other than the fact that she stole the pups, I don't see much harm in her using them to make a coat as long as she gave them a good life beforehand.

My favorite thing to wear as a child was my coonskin hat. Unfortunately I used it for a snowman one year, and it was stolen. Now I'm thinking of buying a skunk* one from the Renaissance Festival . . . the only place that seems to have the sense to sell fur anything around here. The skunk skins are positively gorgeous, and I'd love to see more nuisance animals being put to good use like that.

*Interestingly, this is an animal I refuse to kill myself, or allow my SO to kill, without evidence of disease. I love them too much, though I may live to regret it, I know.

I once did a dress with a fur collar for a girl. She simply HAD to have this crazy ballgown from a videogame for Prom, so I went ahead and did it (didn't hurt that they were offering 700 + mats to do it as a rush job).

That's interesting. A dress inspired by a video game. I kinda like it, but did it turn out looking any good, or was it just odd?

I have never even seen a Native American in Texas and wouldn't know where to look . . . at least not one that hasn't been assimilated. I'll have to google that.

Speaking of dumping animals, someone dumped a duck at a pond near us. It walked up and down the road for a day, looking for its people, before resigning itself to the pond. Ultra friendly, an obvious pet that people had gotten tired of. It would quack its heart out at everyone passing by. I scooped it up and took it to the shelter, poor thing. A neighbor told me she had seen it and planned on catching it and putting it in my yard, since she knew I loved poultry.

Yeah, like I love the mites, lice, and diseases that come with strange birds.

People don't understand that relocating/dumping birds on people's property can be just as damaging, if not more so, than releasing a predator. Sometimes I wish I was able to somehow shoot the animals in front of the relocaters. Maybe if their dreams of the animals having happy lives in their new areas were shattered, they'd quit trying to dump their problems elsewhere.

I have seen squirrels desimate/destroy a small garden with strawberries. Had a friend get mad at her husband for eating the cookies she left on the kitchen counter for a get-together she was having. It turned out a squirrel was coming in through a small hole in a window screen.

Please don't relocate squirrels. They are just rats with fluffy tails.
