Do splayed legs ever fix by themself?

Let's hope.

My kid is so small that there is hardly any weight for him/her to have to counterbalance....And, of course, I may go back in there right now and find him/her back on his/her little butt....

If you have a chick with fuzzy legs, you can still use tape. Just put a little piece of paper towel (to cover the tape's stickiness) on just the section of the tape that wraps around the chick's legs.
Also, helping the chick "practice" walking correctly can help. Support its body a little while gently pointing its legs forward like they should be. Try to lessen your support of its body for a moment or two and hopefully it will push up with its legs and find out that leg angle is a good one for balancing. Gradually progress to moving legs forward so it learns to take steps correctly.

My son just called me (just got home from school). Little Chirpy's bandaids came off but she's standing, a little poorly but standing - better than she was this morning.

So so far so good!!!!!!!!!!

I have one I'm still working on. I'm on day 5 and the little guy is no better. I've tried the band aid thing twice. Both times he got them off. Once on day 2 and the other on day 3. He is still no better. He can hobble to the food and water. Should I leave him or dispatch him before he gets any bigger?

I'd try again. Maybe use sports tape. Also put vertical wraps of sports tape (or masking tape or sticky section of bandaids) around the section between the two legs to secure the the long pieces of tape together. Then the chick won't be able to get the hobble to come unstuck by squirming & pulling.
BTW--For anyone unsure where to put hobbles, they should be on chick's lower legs (below "knees"/hocks) and should allow enough room for the chick to stand with its legs a little farther apart than normal standing position so it can practice walking.

You might also want to do a little "physical therapy" (See my earlier post) with the chick. You can do it with the hobbles on.
You will need to do probably a minimum of eight 1 to 4 minute physical sessions per day for it to make a real difference.
