Best wishes for li'l Jerry!
I've begun a web page about treating splayed leg and other leg problems on my PoultryPedia.com website. You can get to it from the site's home page, or go directly to this link:
http://sites.google.com/a/poultrypedia.com/poultrypedia/poultry-podiatry
(Older version was at http://sites.google.com/a/larsencreek.com/chicken-orthopedics/leg-braces )
Keep in mind--It's important for the chick to learn to keep his legs spaced apart, as well as not twisted to the side.
At his age, I'm thinking the chick would be more likely to learn this if he just had hobbles reinforced with something pretty rigid in the connecting section (in the space between the legs) that maintains the space.
It seems like if you put braces on the thighs/upper legs, the chick really begins relying on them for balancing. The chick would work more at learning to balance himself if he only had less-stable lower-leg hobbles.
I don't begin to know all the answers, but will try to pass along what I learn. Over time, I'll continue adding thoughts to the page on PoultryPedia.com.
