Do these Orp hens look close to laying? *UPDATED SHE LAID AN EGG!!!!*

Oh goody!!! Chickie must be about ready to start then. Looking at older pics of her, I can see how much darker red her comb and waddles have gotten. Thank you all for responding to my question.

That one was Ginny (who turned out not to be a BR as she has been laying white eggs), my BR is Hermione, lol.

OK Thank you everyone for the info. I love this forum!!

OK. So now one of the hens has been doing the squat. If we get near her she drops on the ground with tush pushed up. That's a good sign right? They are 17 weeks old now and her comb and wattle are redder. How long usually from squat to lay?

Same for me. With all four of mine that are laying now, I saw them squat for the first time just over a week before their first egg.

OK. I picked her up yesterday after her cute little squat and checked her pelvic bones. She has 3 fingers width between them and her vent was loose, pink and wet. So we are real close now right? I thought I would log this all in one thread for others who have the same questions.

I remember when mine started laying about 2 months ago, I went and picked one up while she was squating and plop, out popped an egg!

She kinda looked at me as to say "oops, did I do that" or " it wasnt MEEEE!!" I never picked one up again after that, but there for awhile I would always find an egg out in the run and I think it was her, but now shes laying with the other 9 girls in there nesting boxes. Oh by the way nice Buffs ( only on BYC can I say THAT and not get my head nocked off!)

They remind me of my girls. You will love'em.
Oh, and the 11 month wait on foaling, yea that bites, but around here its like christmas when they do finally arrive. Had 2 colts this summer, unfortunatly one of the mares passed about 1 month after foaling and now whe are taking care of her little orphan.

Hes doing good though.

My buff orp. is about 23 weeks old and you can hardly even tell she has wattles, and her comb is very small. She is kind of small, and much lighter than the other chickens. my GLW looks like she is maturing at a good rate, and my black australorp is big, her combs and wattles have gotten huge in the last month, they grew so fast I thought she might have been a rooster.
none of mine are laying, the BA squats if you pet her, but they don't do it on their own.
