We have some 5-6 week old chicks. Almost fully feathered and we are finally having some warme weather so I'm going to put them outside for the day. If they have access to bugs and grass should they also have access to grit?
I would think they would be able to find their own grit if they were free ranging...but if you are keeping them in the cage on the grass like this pic I personally would add some.
If they are able to scratch in dirt they will get all they need .On grass a little in their feeder is plenty just be sure to watch them . Hot sun can get them to hot quick .
If you have thick sod, they may not get the grit they need. I take a shovel full of gravel from my drive way. It has plenty of varied size stones for them.
I always provide a little for them just to be safe. I don't know if they're able to find/get what they need when they are still in a strictly controlled outside setting like the dog crate. That's the same way I start getting mine outside too.
