Do we interfere/worry too much these days?

OMG! Your so me! I was just sitting here at 3:30 A.M. thinking the same EXACT thing. My grandparents and my parents had chicken, ducks, turkeys. They didn't have coops, just barns. They didn't have runs. They didn't treat for anything as far as I can remember. On the other hand, I don't believe that they found the pleasure in chicken keeping that I do. My are pets and their's were farm animals and I think that's okay.
Enjoy your chickens!

Thank you! I'm glad to know I'm not the only one. I do think you're right... they kept chickens because it was practical to do so and didn't find the same joy in it as I do, but then I guess with the joy comes the stress sometimes too. We also have horses, cats and ducks and sometimes I wonder why

My two cents, my parents and grand parents also had chickens, they also had lots of land, guns they would use to kill predators, less access to fresh food (they also had goats and other barn animals they would raise to eat). My setup is for eggs mostly, my neighbor would not like me to shoot a gun - even at a predator (i tried to use my bb gun to shoot a rat and still haven't heard the end of it) since they are less than a half acre away. We all do what we can, my life is very different from my parents/grandparents and I am confident that my chickens and our lives are comfortable and adapted for us all

I used to like you. :plbb

I know, I'm sorry, but...dogs(pugs are not the only ones) bred to have those smashed(deformed) faces have serious breathing problems, tongues that won't fit in their mouths, bulging eye problems...it's just terribly cruel IMO. Saw a pet vet show where they had to amputate over half of a dogs tongue so it could chew it's food without also chewing it's tongue.<shudders>UHG!
