Barbara Kilarski has written in her "keeping Chickens" that if you can not use the egg that is dirty soon then you can wash it with with a damp sponge ;with no detergent, to rub off the dirt, then dry the egg thoroughly with a soft cloth, then rubbing a little cooking oil over the entire egg and wiping away the excess to help replace the natural coating that protects the shell from dirt and bacteria. She recommends this as a last resort as the unbroken shell protects the egg from the dirt on the shell She recommends a dry rub will do the trick.
