Do you feel bad for the gal at the bottom of the pecking order?

Of my four hens, one is clearly the loner at the end of the pecking order. The other three hang out together and she gets bossed around by my Flock Matron (barred rock) all of the time. She is in good health and her feathers are intact. I feel bad for her. Is this because I am a human and want love and acceptance among all chickens?

I do have to keep reminding myself that chickens can be sooooo mean at times. I also feel bad for the poor bottom of the pecking order.

I find the more I cuddle the bottom girl, the more the other hens pick on her. So what I've gone to doing is pretending she's my hen and I'm a rooster. I bok and peck at the ones that go near her and do little side dances at the girls (okay so I'm weird, not like you haven't done it) so they go "Oh crud, Fanny Cradock is MAMA's mate... and we love MAMA and want to be her mate... so we gotta be nice to Fanny."

.... >_> But that could just be my flock.
