My flock is currently 23 members strong and consists of one ROOSTER (over 1 year old male), one cockerel (under 1 year old male, 'teenager') likely to end up at freezer camp, two 3 month old cockerels destined for freezer camp, one un-started pullet ('teenager'), seven hens (over 1 year old), and the balance being chicks of less than a month old, all but two of which are with their mothers. Eight of the newborns are with one mother, one of the newborns is with another mother, and the two without a momma were rejected by the mother with only one chick; apparently she only wanted one baby. I let my Japanese coturnix quail keep these two company until they were able to move about comfortably & confidently (about a week).
I am expecting about half of the chicks to turn out male and really hoping to get a suitable #2 rooster for my flock.

4 roosters and a 8 week old cockerel. 4 is sort of our max on roosters but I don’t think I’ll be able to give up any so not sure how that’s going to work out. I’m attached to the current roosters and the cockerel is a beautiful little splash Olive Egger.

Good for you. If I had the ability I would love to do that!
Thank you! I'm thinking about buying the property attached to my lot and starting a legit rooster sanctuary. It's a crappy little acre lot that, despite is 20-year-old plans say, cannot be used for a 3 bedroom house. He's desperate to get rid of it, but won't budget on the price.

That would be so awesome, there are so many unwanted roos that end up in the freezer because of their gender it's so sad 😞 I love roosters so much I love watching them protect there flock, and provide for their hens. They give everything for the girls. My roo found a bug and killed and them called "his" girls over to eat he always let's them eat all the treats and bugs then he eats whatever they don't want.

Are we allowed to have them? No. How many do we have? Ten maybe? 😅 Almost as many as our allotment of chickens total lol
Ha! I don't know if we are allowed but hey we live like 3 miles out of town and the neighbors have them so oh well. 😅 I like a good crow in the morning. As far as I read Florida allows 4 HENS after you take a course on how to care for them in a college and pass your test of course ;):lau but I think that's for Residencial property. Well I have 10 hens and a roo and I never took a course and I'm fine ( plus I'm sure the neighbors didn't either 🙃)

Luckily we live right up against a nice field and our neighbours don’t care. One of our roos actually was theirs and moved in since his hens got killed. My friend has to take a course and get a permit, which I think is helpful and a pain lol. They had some good info, but I just wanna get alllllll the chickies
