Red, people like you are exactly why I ALWAYS answered my phone. Morning, Noon, Night, you got me. I might have been asleep, I might have been in the shower, but I answered.

Em, now addicted to having her phone on at all times.

Most real business have business hours that you would call between. And they make sure they have someone to answer the phone during that time.
If someone is calling you about a fish at midnight,.... yeah..issues..

Actually, that was a big part of the reason my clients went with me over the competition. They liked the fact that if Junior poured Kool-Aid in the fish tank before bed, I'd come out. Power goes out and the aquarium is flooding the floor at midnight? Yeah, I'm out there. I have made many, many house calls in the middle of the night...and it's always been worth it for me in the end.

I guess we aren't a real business then. If I know a place is family-run, I will give them a break. Especially for a place like ours that is a farm. If someone is sitting next to the phone all day, they can't be out running a farm. I'm very glad that most of our customers seem to be very understanding of the fact that we are a small family farm and therefore we don't have secretaries or office staff.

I am usually up all night and sleep during the day. Then I spend a lot of time outside. I don't leave a message because I don't want to be called back. I don't want the phone to wake me up, and I don't want whoever I am calling to waster their time calling if I am outside. If it's really important (like the vets office), I will leave a message and stay in the house and awake, but not often...

My house phone doen't get much signal outside and my cell phone doesn't get a signal in the house. Having a house with steel siding means I don't have to wear a foil hat

I've never been one to talk to friends and family on the phone, just don't care for it. So if one of them calls me and leaves a message, I do call back, but always leave a message if voice mail picks up. I agree with an earlier post, once I've returned a call and have had to leave a message, I'm done, and I can forget about it. Ball is in their court. However, in my experiences, many business do not call you back in a timely manner when messages are left, so no,I do not leave messages with businesses...if I'm inquiring about something. I want a real person to answer my question right then and there. If I am responding to a business, then yes, I will leave a message, as long as I don't have to leave any real personal info.

I will add, that one thing I cannot stand is someone that waits til the beep, then hangs up.

If you are going to wait that long, for goodness sake leave a stinkin' message. I hate when I've gone through the whole process of getting to my messages on voicemail; dial your number, enter your code, blah, blah, blah, to hear "click". My daughters' have friends that do this. Drives me nuts.
We have a rule for our girls. If you are calling a friend, and they are not home, you are allowed to leave ONE message. You can call a couple of times throughout the evening, but only one message. I've come home and have had 5 messages in a row from one of my daughters friends, half of them hangups, because she waited too long, and the infamous "click" was the message. So irritating!!
