Do you name your chickens and if so how do you choose their names.

I have two younger sisters, so they always have ideas for names!

Right now we have Friday, Oddball, Blackie (
roll.png
), Apple, and Ginger Pye.

We used to have Camino, Little Red (RIP

), Blondie, Stayin' Alive (who we ate:

), White Wing, and Pretzel.

Our names for the next brood are Beatrix, E.B. (after the writer), Gwendolyn, Daisy, Omlette, and Parmesean. (sp?)

I only have named one rooster and that was after we ate him. I picked the name because he thought he was tough but he was an ol softy so i called him rooster cogburn

We name some, but not others...

Those WE raised by hand we named
(All the "Sisters" named due to breed, attitude or color):

Red & Ruby (Red Production)
Amber & Buffy (Buff Rock)
Onyx & Ebony (Australorps)
Popcorn & Taffy (silver Laced Wyandottes)
Princess & Oreo (Turkens)
Pearl & Noodles (California Whites)
Valkrie, Robin & Hedwig the Roo (Aracaunas)
Rip, Ronnie & Scooter (Bantam OE's)
Puff Daddy & Fifi (white Silkies)
Shadow, Raven & Elvis (Black Silkies)
Dexter & Lacey (Golden Laced Sebrights)
Kashi (Mille Fluer Duccle)
Nibbles (Showgirl)
Twitters (mixed Mille Fluer/OE)...

We did NOT name our 8 Rock hens, as they were "pullets" when we got them, and not hand-raised... the 2 Rooo's that came with them we did name (Rocky the Partidge Rock and Bubbah the Barred Rock) But they were sent to new homes.

We have 3 new Silkie-mix babies-- still working on names-- but will not name them till we see what they'll look like!

Napoleon- Bantam RIR rooster

Big Red- RIR rooster

Merlin- Americana rooster (has a gray beard)

Barred Rock Obama- Barred Rock rooster

Shizzle- Silkie Frizzle

Mo' Shizzle- another Silkie Frizzle

I always give my birds time to decide their name. We are great at coming up with their appropriate names.

The disposittion of the bird determines it's name, some are quite appropiate.

It really makes having a flock alot of fun, plus it's good management on our part knowing, and noticing the difference between flock members, the more members, the more attention needed to keep names straight....
