Do you name your chickens and if so how do you choose their names.

Cornelia and Marie (Deadliest Catch fan)

Sarah got picked on a lot in the beginning but bravely stood her ground, so I named her after Sarah Palin.

Isabell cuz I like the name.

Susan after my mil.

MaryJane after my mom.

And that's all I have for now.

my kids named ours. keep in mind my kids are 3 and 8...
~Buffy the RIR cause she was "Buffy the Boss" and still is
~Ming-ming from the wonderpets is the WR that was sunny yellow and thats all that mattered to my son
~Pixie is the BA that was just cute as a "lil fairy" per my daughter
and then ~Tinker the BO. she got her name last since they couldnt decide so I picked since she is always nosey and wants to "tinker" with things.

the two new babies are EE's and named Twilight(hmmm? where did DD get that from?) and sparks cause thats what a 3yr old thinks is cool

The ones we raised from chicks have names:

Lucky- 8yo DD's RIR
Shirley Curly- 5 yr olds BO
Rockette (or Rocket)- DH's BR
Chirpy & Twirpy- my EEer girls- Chirpy "talked" constantly as a chick and Twirpy was and still is the smallest.
And finally--- Bucky- my EE roo- don't know why I named him that, it just came to me the first day I was holding him. Funny enough, as he was going through his fugly growing stage, DH said "He looks just like Buckbeak from Harry Potter!"

The older flock, only a few have names.
BB- stands for "Big Blackie"
Beauty- I think she is the prettiest hen I've ever had- she's some kind if mix I guess. kind of looks like a buff brahma without feathered legs.
Lil Man- the banty roo in that pen
and Crazy- the guinea- the name is self explainatory!

Yes! At some point in life most of our birds get names. (we have chickens and guineas, the guineas are not always named)

We pick names normally by personality or some quirky thing the birds do. Sometimes it will be by color, or even breed. Until recently, we've been waiting to name the chicks till we can sex them. (Don't wanna get attached to a soon-to-be-dinner) But now I have tried feather-sexing the chicks at day old, so if I'm accurate in that then we will probably name the chicks whenever we like, lol.

Here's some of our birds' names:

Guineas:

Mr Pied
Mrs Lavender
Pippin (a.k.a. Mr White)
Mary (a.k.a. Mrs White)
Bebe
Dixie
Mike and Ike (who look nearly alike!)
T and his hatch-mate Vi (TV, lol)
And we've got about 26 more which need names, lol. (So many of them I can't even tell apart, and I spend a lot of time with them)

Chickens:

Roosters:

KJ (Named after our friend who gave him to us, using her initials. Araucana mix)
Mr Red (RIR mix)
Freezer Burn (Banty mix, he nearly was freezer burn.)
Coal Scuttle (Purebred Columbian Wyandotte, mean to the ladies though)
Fluffy (Purebred Columbian Wyandotte, a very nice bird. Calm, gentle, and will follow you like a puppy.)
Speedy Gonzalos (Banty mix, very fast and agile)
Travis (Handsome RIR mix, must be like 75% RIR.)
Curly (RIR/New Hampshire Red mix, he's got curled toes)

Hens:

Itsy Bitsy
Alpha (first chick hatched from our flock, daughter of Itsy Bitsy)
Squeaks (RIP, I liked her a lot)
Tammy and Terry (Purebred RIR sisters)
Lucy (Purebred New Hampshire Red, my best layer)
"Emily's Mother" (she doesn't really have a name)
Little Red Hen (I would almost say she's pure RIR)
Dusty
Dove
Gwen
Star (Purebred Red Star)
Buffy (Purebred BO hen, she's persnickety.)

Cockerels and Pullets:

Fireball
Jeniveve
Black Baby (her name may change..)
Alfred and Willemena
Roger and Cynthia
Emily and Katie
Hoss (like Bonanza's Hoss, except I think our Hoss is a pullet)
Ginger
Shade
Dot (pending)
(Orange) Blossom (pending)

If I could think of enough names I would name them all, lol.

I do but only a few of my birds have names so far. I just pick what comes to me (or DD does, lol) and seems to fit the animal.

Dogs:
Cooter the Coon Hound
Mojo (this one was named at the shelter but it fit so we kept it)

Cats:

Maggie Poofie
Abby the Ferious Tabby

Chickens:
Chicky Poo
Fluff
Speckles
Chocolate Tree 1, 2 & 3 (DD picked this one)
Jack (this one was my nephew's choice, luckly it turned out to be a roo but he's not staying)
Little Rooster or Bunny Bunny as DD named my little phoenix roo

Bantams ----- James and Juliet (Lost Characters)
Krystal (video game character)
Twinkle (sparkly looking)
Velvet (black and fuzzy frizzle) roo

Standards--- Buff Orps ---- CLAIR (Lost)
Goldie
Black Aus-----Jackie and LOLA
Americana-----Tundra
Wynadotte-----Lacey
Barred Rock----Pepper
RIRs-----------Ginger and Cinnamon
White Rock---CRACKER
Splash Cochin--STORM
Blue Cochin-----MOLLY
Blue Cochin Rooster... Shadow
Easter Egger-----Shrek

Three 4 weeker RIR are Henrietta and Jezabelle and no name (might be a roo)

GRANDKIDS named all but 4....

My pets have always had literary names of some sort (I have a degree in English and one in writing...what do you expect?!).

So the chickens are:

Ursula (LeGuin), a BR
Madeleine (L'Engle), an EE
Virginia (Woolf), but we call her Ginny, a BO
Jane (Bronte, or Eyre, take your pick), a BO
and Hermione (Granger), an EE

All writers, except for Hermione, who is a character in the Harry Potter series.

I love this thread!
