Do You Own A Gun ?

Society as a whole has changed in the last 20 years. As long as the judicial system only give criminals a slap on the hand, and turns them back out to society, it is only going to get worst, in my opinion.

While I am pro gun, I respect the right of those that don't like or believe in them.

With that said, those that do NOT want to own a gun, may I suggest you keep a few cans of wasp spray in your house? It will shoot 20-25 feet, where most mace is only effective in 6 feet or so. This give you an opportunity to keep a home invader further away from you, and if you get it in their eyes, their only concern will be getting it out.

I will not try to push guns on anyone, but I will try to push you to think of ways to defend yourselves.

And yes he is a fool. He is more likely to shoot one of his kids friends

the #1 rule of gun owners.. be sure of what it is that you are shooting at..

if he's pulling a trigger without knowing for sure what it is that he is firing at.. he is a fool

I do not know the price of ammo, because I have never been the one to buy it. I have been told 22 ammo is through the roof, but I would have to ask DH or my dad for specific prices.

.22 ammo is cheap but always out of stock.. often time it's the caliber use by children since there's little to no recoil-- mainly for target shooting.. not a defensive type of ammo

true.. now aday.. criminals seem to have more rights than the law abiding citizens in some cases

i'm all about preventive measures

we have a 6ft wall around our house, alarm sign, dog sign, shoes at front door, car in front, etc..

simply put the house looks like there's always someone home and there's nothing worth robbing .. the doors and windows are locked..

i did what i can go to prevent my house being the next potential target of a home invasion

but these are all the things i can do.. and yet they still breaking in.. then there's nothing i can do..

there's a line from man on fire movie that i still remember even to this day..

"forgiveness is a between them and god, it's my job to arrange the meeting."

I live reasonably remote, but own land on both sides of a busy state highway. The only "neighbor" I have is an 88 year old man 3/4 of a mile away.
I've got livestock, and he used to have, so our places are fully fenced with gates that stay closed, up to and including the driveway in, in case a cow or calf gets into the yard.
But the fence is not only for livestock, it is for your protection. If you break down, holler. One of us or the dog will hear you. If you cross the fence without letting someone know, I feel you are a threat, and will use whatever means necessary to protect my family, as you have no business on the place.

Love this thread! I currently live in a development, although somewhat rural. I'm currently looking for a larger property. I currently don't own any guns, but I think my first purchase will be a shotgun. I grew up around guns and hunting. I figured a shotgun would be a reasonable start for pest control or protection. At least until the recoil knocks me on my butt!

You can get shotguns with reasonable recoil. I cannot remember the numbers, I will have to ask, but it is like 600/1100 or something like that, they have less recoil, I shot the thing easily, it also had a shock absorbers in the butt. It makes for a very expensive gun but worth it if you can shoot it.

You can shoot low brass shotgun shells for getting familiar with shooting a shotgun. They have less recoil than say buckshot due to a smaller powder charge.

Thanks! Good to know! I haven't been around guns since leaving the army, but if I find my future homestead, I plan to get at least a shotgun. My dad showed me how to use his shotgun, .22 rifle and a .22 pistol. But that was a long time ago. I loved qualifying on the M-16 when I was in the service (also a long time ago)! I used to volunteer for "range NCO." I know I've forgotten a lot!

Winchester target loads usually are listed "min(imum)" dr eq which is about as light a load that you will get, and you won't be paying for shells labeled "reduced recoil"

Also, for self defense and / or hunting, don't rule out a 20ga. Several will say or recommend only a 12ga, but that is an ego thing in my opinion. It is all about shot placement. My question to them is always, "Are you any deader killed with a 12ga compared to being killed with a 20ga?"

Whatever you get ( and you don't have to get caught up in the name brand fad to get a reliable weapon, be it pistol, rifle or shotgun) get familiar and comfortable with it. If it is unreliable, do NOT keep it. When you need it most, is when it will let you down, and in a stressful situation, you do not want to be concerned if it will fire when you pull the trigger.

A .410 or 20 gauge would be good. Also if you got the semi auto variety the recoil is less as part of the energy is used to operate the semi auto rather than transfer directly to the shooter.

I grew up in Arizona, rural Arizona. I didn't know it wasn't normal to see people carrying guns until I moved back east. In my high school the principal wanted to know what kind of gun was in the back window and if you got your limit that morning!

I'm not even that old.

This is why we're all lined up to buy smart guns!
