Do You Own A Gun ?

No. The kind where you need to wear a ring or watch or some other thing to make it maybe possibly work.

http://www.iguntechnology.com/ - like these.

I knew what it was.

Let me ask this- in a home invasion, your spouse or whatever is wearing the ring/watch or whatever and gets hit. You still have an invader in your house and you pick up the smart gun to defend yourself while someone is trying to kick the door to the room in, are you going to remember to get the ring or watch so you can defend yourself?
An empty or unreliable gun in a gunfight is a club. Period. I don't plan to let someone get that close to me or my family.

I live in the country now, always lock my car and house doors and always carry my Glock!

It is OK to shoot lighter practice loads to get familiar, but you NEED to know what the recoil will feel like when it comes time. Also your Adrenalin will be pumping, you might be shaking... Try doing a bunch of jumping jacks and then hit your target.

I rarely use my sights, we call it point shooting. Practice drawing and hitting you target, you won't be able to tell an aggressor "wait while I line my sights up on you" or "wait while I turn the light on".

It is true, NEVER put your finger on the trigger until you are ready to pull the trigger and KNOW what you are shooting at.

Here here.

For those who don't like guns, the wasp spray was a REALLY good suggestion. Basically similar to bear mace.

The question might should be how many do you own? We talk about moving out of CA sometimes for many political reasons. But it's bad everywhere.

Why don't people get that laws are for law abiding citizens and criminals don't care. So punish the many because of the few? I say enforce the laws we have and stop giving away our freedoms to the inmates!

I live reasonably remote, but own land on both sides of a busy state highway. The only "neighbor" I have is an 88 year old man 3/4 of a mile away.
I've got livestock, and he used to have, so our places are fully fenced with gates that stay closed, up to and including the driveway in, in case a cow or calf gets into the yard.
But the fence is not only for livestock, it is for your protection. If you break down, holler. One of us or the dog will hear you. If you cross the fence without letting someone know, I feel you are a threat, and will use whatever means necessary to protect my family, as you have no business on the place.

home invasions or robberies are common around here.. at least a few of them a day..

you saw the video of a gun store robbery?.. probably a bunch of teenagers

even with security cameras-- they stole about 50 guns from the gun store using their truck all under 1 minute 30 seconds-- i'll link in the video..

the typical (the goal) response time is 5 minutes around here.. but even at 5 minutes the suspects are already long gone

home invasions/robberies will not only rob you of your sense of security but also the physical possessions you have..

if it's your life vs physical possessions.. just let them take what they want.. if you are alive you can work and just buy those things again.. if you can afford to buy them again

yes.. you can replace things. but what if a homeowner was pretty much paycheck by paycheck.. and the tools (cars, computers, etc) for his job were stolen.. so how can he work and continue to make his mortgage payment ?

i think there was a study of the middle class Americans recently.. about 60% do not have any emergency funds what so ever.. so if they ended up with just a $500 emergency car repair, insurance deductible, etc.. it will make life even harder for them than it's already is

i'm all about preventive measures.. i did all i can so i'll not be the next victim and yet you still insist on breaking the law and taking things that i worked hard for.. i'll show you no mercy.. since i don't know how many signs and preventive measures i can put up to discourage them so they will move on

Love this thread! I currently live in a development, although somewhat rural. I'm currently looking for a larger property. I currently don't own any guns, but I think my first purchase will be a shotgun. I grew up around guns and hunting. I figured a shotgun would be a reasonable start for pest control or protection. At least until the recoil knocks me on my butt!
You can get shotguns with reasonable recoil. I cannot remember the numbers, I will have to ask, but it is like 600/1100 or something like that, they have less recoil, I shot the thing easily, it also had a shock absorbers in the butt. It makes for a very expensive gun but worth it if you can shoot it.

shotguns are good home/self defense weapons

you should try the gun stores

they have a lot of guns to rent if you like

these are rental estimates for my area

$8 for handguns
$15 for riffles

some gun stores will not allow shotguns while some will

when you rent a gun at a gun store they will require you to pay for their ammo - you can not use your ammo from somewhere else

there's no particular reason-- it's just a way for them to make money off you
hmm.png

when i rented a glock 19 from them they charged me $ 24 for a box of 50 rds fmj 9mm of unknown brand.. of which i can get for $14.67 at wal-mart federal brand

but renting is cheaper than buying a new gun.. since guns are AS IS products.. most stores will not allow return if you already used it. or even just walked out the store after purchase..

shotguns are classified by gauge -- the most popular ones would be 12 and 20 gauge

if you watch those old western movies. 12 gauge is common in those videos- but the recoil is pretty bad.. 10 gauge is even worst

you can add various things to reduce the recoil of a shotgun though. changing the stock. add more padding or use the additional grip handle, etc..

for beginner 20 gauge might be ideal-- or if you have a small build

.410 is not really a gauge but ideal for children

if you want a defensive shotgun for home/self defense.. consider either 20 or 12-- if you can handle the recoil.. 10 gauge is the most destructive

also unlike what most people think (probably from movies) we do have to aim with a shotgun

next one to consider is the type of barrel for your shotgun-- since the effective range of a shotgun will depend on the barrel being used in the shotgun

some shotguns are customizable so you can change if it you like.. customizable shotguns are more expensive though

once you decided on a gauge and barrel.. ammo would be next

remember that some of these ammo will not be compatible with smaller gauge shotguns

for example.. you can not use 0 - 000 buck shots in a 20 gauge shotgun

some people will try to put them in anyway.. but i would suggest for safety reasons.. don't do it.. if you still want to use buck shots 0- 000 .. get the 12 gauge instead

You talk about smart guns, then laws and how criminals don't care or obey them. The criminal part I agree with, but not the smart gun part.

Gun control laws don't work. If they did, Chicago wouldn't be a bad as it is. Guns are NOT the problem, people are.

guns are tools for humans..

the same for cars, knives, etc..

it will depend on how you use them

guns kill people

or

guns save lives/people

it will depend on which perspective you are looking at

for example.. if you have a family member who was gunned down in a drive by shooting.. you would likely use guns kill people

on the other hand. if you have family members who were saved from his/her attacker.. then you will use guns save lives

so depend on which perspective you are looking at it

i'm a fairly new gun owner.. so when you say guns kill people.. does it apply to me as well? since i have guns for 3-4 years now and shooting nothing but paper targets.. am i killing anyone? might as well use "cars kill people" but does it really apply for all owners? not really..

guns are probably one of the few things that you will own that are so restricted.. that in order to use them you have to go to a designated area.. pay by the hour just to use them.. they are not something you can just use right in the middle of the public place whenever you want.

personally i see a lot of invisible chains wrapped around my gun .. since i have to determine if it will be a justify situation to use it? is my life or family life in danger? etc..

so if we break it down to its core

i think it's better to use

people kill people
people save lives/people

i own a lot of things. .guns, cars, phones, hardware supplies, etc.. of which can cause deaths . as the matter of fact pretty much anything in this world can cause death (if given the right amount and condition)

the affluenza teen case took the cake for me -- too rich to know right from wrong? really? ..the guy only get 2 years -- after a beer run -ended up killing 4 innocent people while under the influence

-robbery
-drunk driving- UNDER age no less
-manslaughter with a deathly weapon (a truck traveling at high speed for this case)

so..

car accidents? drunk drinking?
text while walking ? text while driving?
home made bombs using screws and nails and chemicals available at your local hardware stores?

if there's a will there's a way-- the things we use in our daily lives can be used to kill another person so should all our rights be even more restricted with each death or our possessions taken away?

teenagers are more likely to kill themselves in car accidents.. should we increase the driving age to 21? instead of 15 1/2 (my state) to get a permit ?

in my state--you have to be 18 to own a rifle and 21 to own a handgun

so if you see some under 21 suspect using a handgun to kill someone..it's a red flag there

there's already a law against straw purchases.. and there's little we can do about parenting problem

i'm already going through background check every time i buy a gun from a gun store/ gun range.. i don't buy from a private party since i don't know for sure the history of the gun.. so the new laws they are proposing will not affect me anyway..

but little do people know that there are other ways to get guns.. easier.. cheaper...but illegal.. as a law abiding citizen and a responsible gun owner i'll not go that route

since to me the right to bear arms is like any right i'm entitled to.. i do not want to lose it by doing something illegal.

there are existing laws already.. so enforce them!

since if you think about it.. laws don't mean anything to criminals or will they stop someone from killing another person.

we have a law here that will charge the parents if they forgot their kids in the car (which is how it should be) especially when it's 110 outside

yet.. no law to charge the parents in those drunk driving or accidental deaths by guns or cars?

there was a 14 yr old driving a car under the influence and t-boned another family.. so after this case? what new laws should we propose or rights taken away for the rest of the population ?
