There is not a big difference. Production reds are RIRs that had their gene pool messed up because hatcheries crossed them with New Hampshire Reds, which is a very similar breed that was produced from RIRs. Anyways, production reds do not have the rich mahogany color that actual RIRs have. If you got your RIR from a hatchery or feed store then it is most likely a Production Red.
My RIR actually came from a local farmer who breeds them and a couple other breeds. That’s certainly not to say she has any better genes than a Hatchery, just that she didn’t come from one. The only birds we got from a Hatchery are the EEs and the Calicos. Both of which have been healthy and strong, but the genes do seem a bit off from what I’ve read about their respective breeds online.
Only about half of my EEs have tufted faces, the rest just look bare with no tufts and no wattles.
And then there’s the issue of a potentially male princess, which according to Google, should have been a different color at birth than the females.
