Do you sell feathers? Question....

[[[.......Hubby walked in and suddenly thinks he should go build a coop for a bachelor flock of day olds in the spring. .....]]]]]]

Fads can pass quickly. I suspect that it will be over before anyone can gear up to raise feathers for hair ornaments.

I'm still excited about making some jewelry for myself from my chicken feathers, don't know why I didn't think of it before.

Have you tried a bar or rod to kill them with ? Lay the bird on the ground, place the bar over their neck, while holding the bar down with both of your feet and the neck under the bar, pull on the chickens legs, this breaks their neck and kills them, but do it quickly so the chicken does not suffer. After the kill hang them and lop off the head to drain the blood. Saves the feathers if that is what you are aiming for, dry plucking they come out fairly easy, keep a paper sack handy to put the plucked feathers in, after you have gotten the feathers you wish to keep you can scald the carcass to remove the remaining feathers or just skin it out. I have a friend that uses feathers in her jewlery and other things, we got a lot of feathers that were not ruined for her bby processing the birds this way.

Now as gross as that is THAT is the kind of answer I was looking for. If you cut the bird when killing it you will make a huge mess as far as my experience tells me!

Been wearing feathers in my hair most of my life, so I was surprised where I found out how popular this was.

Earrings too. I have a ton of feathers at all times anyway, but a few months ago one of my daughter called and asked if I had feather earrings. Then mentioned the feathers in the hair. I figured that was cool maybe if I can get out of my depression I'd make a few. To tell you the truth, I'm so blind lately I couldn't see the feathers in the hair pics. LOL Then when I found out what they were I laughes and said "OH, they want flies!" My girls said, "NO! Mom those are hair feathers!" OK, so I made clips like I did for friends in high school. They sold them all in one day. Only about 20 of them, but they wanted more. I still haven't made them after all this time.

I gave my cousin some feather earrings I made just before my husband died. The feathers were from my guineas. She went nuts for those things, but my cousin is a nut and always makes people feel good about things she's given. She does hair. Used to do it for the movies, not she's back home and working a shop. She told me to make some feather items and she'd make me some cash. LOL I said, "yeah right." I just got a text from her yesterday. This conversation was around Christmas. I get "FEATHERS! I need lots and lots of feathers! Call me!" OK so she never answers and I need to call? Just waiting till the sun comes up and she is getting that call. I have feathers all over my kitchen table, in plastic bags on my craft cart, in drawers of the cart, on my kitchen counter where I sat some down while I was feeding birds and rabbites.

Most are waiting to be cleaned. I have some that I've shaped and most are just natural. I have very few that I can actually dye, but I have that to do also. Noe if I had Grizzly's??? I'd be set.

OH no, she's totally crazy. That's why I love her. LOL

I'm loopy, not sleep and gotta get Makayla to school at 10 and drive to pick up a roo when she gets out. I always do this when zi need to be someplace. Can't sleep.

I'll let you know how it goes.

I don't know, but I hope we get some good ideas on the best way to harvest these feathers before my 7 week old Barred Rock cockerels get grown! I got some straight run chicks and now I have 4 or 5 extra boys out there. Been trying to get rid of them, but nobody wants the boys. Thinking their purpose in life might be to grow me some beautiful feathers!
