Doberman Appreciation Thread!!!!!!!!!!

Don’t knock it till ya try it 😉

Actually… have I ever told yall I used to hate Dobermans? I used to think they were all bad and aggressive, then I learned how idiotic I was to think a dog is bad just because of the breed, like how so many people do with pits. I think it’s crazy how much I have changed my opinion on Dobermans.
Oh wow that is WILD LOL

Ahh ok

Must be different experiences because I’ve met far more dog/people aggressive GSDs than I have dobies (none). Granted, I have encountered FAR more GSDs than dobies. How many dobies have you actually met that were aggressive? I feel like you are falling victim to the over hyped aggressive association of the breed. Pit bulls get far worse reputation yet you don’t fall for that because you’ve seen first hand that isn’t always the case. Don’t you think that if you’d had the opportunity to meet more dobies that might happen with them as well?

Good breeder is key with any dog
I think it also has to do with the fact GSD are quite popular dogs, and a lot of people just get them without realizing the intensity or needs of the breed leading to more becoming aggressive or reactive, whereas dobies are not as common and the people that get dobies know more about them as a breed. Generally, that is, as obviously not everyone with a dobie is knowledgeable

Agreed.

There was a reactive one in Brews puppy class but at least with that, they were actively trying to change it and work on it and were LITERALLY in a training class so I respect it. I’m pretty sure that dog might have been a bit older and just like auditing the class for the experience/distractions but not sure. I know there was one person who was DEFINITELY doing that which I think is great but yeah.

Yeah that’s a good point, and due to the popularity GSDs are often over bred and have genetic temperament issues

True. SO many BYB GSD breeders around here/New England in general and they are mostly extremely popular too and recommended all the time! I haven’t checked them ALL out so I’m sure there are good ones too but it’s overshadowed by all the BYBs LOL a lot just breed for color and/or bloodlines too like “Czech dogs” so usually silver/sable. Or they’ll combine lines which CAN work in some situations but not always and you have to know what you’re doing. Some will claim they have fantastic temperaments or the puppy owners will claim that but that’s great and all but what about health testing? Titles? Etc. some supposedly health test LOL but it can be so hard to find a good one!!!!!

That too. Over popularity has ruined many breeds. I do think personally any intense breed, like dobies, Shepard, even bully breeds, need an owner who is intentional about that breed. Not just someone who wants a dog, someone who wants that breed and even as a pet will give it some purpose. That's why I'm unsure whether my next dog will be a GSD, as much as I love them I do not wish to get a intense dog and under work it

Yeah definitely a big issue, it’s so frustrating

I feel like that’s the most common cause of dog reactivity and bad behavior.

Good point once again. Same reason I won’t get a Mal LOL
