Does any one know where to get african pygmy geese

So you think even though shes so young and there used to zoo that they would sell them too her she wanted me to ask you guys if they would sylvan by the way

I would personally send an email first that says a little bit about you and how you raise your ducks. Tell them about what you raise and approx. how many babies you get a year. Describe your feeding system, pond cleaning, anything like that. Tell and show ppic of your pen you will keep the birds you want in. This may take a lot of time, but it shows that you really want these birds.
Hopefully this helped,
Justin

I assure you, all that is not only a good idea, but will be mandatory. They arent going to part with ducks like that til they are confident they will be properly cared for. Things like predator control, housing, feed given, time in the business (newbies will be passed quickly as they have SO MANY people and zoological facilities wanting these)
Want and desire must not out weigh your abilities.

As for the spotted tree ducks, I assume that was directed back at me. They are easy, no different than any other treeduck care wise. Only thing is they dont reproduce well, and are very scarce in captivity as a result. Sylvan is the ONLY place I have ever seen those in the US.

Several private collections have pygmy's BUT they will not let you know it cause most breed very few if any, Sylvan usually buys them back if possible, and they dont want to be hammered with e-mails requesting them.

One side note, they are a tropical bird, if you live in a cold climate they MUST be kept warm in the winter or they will die. They are nothing like North American ducks when is comes to winter hardiness.

Actually if you can get this guy from over seas to export some for you, you'd have a better chance at that and be cheaper than trying to get some state side.
It's amazing the price difference in Europe compared to here. If I remember correctly, african pygmys in Great Britain are just a couple hundred a pair....you just have to import them and pay the quarantine fees for a month.

Hi Aubrey. I wonder what those quarantines would be. Because That might save about 800 bucks. Im gonna try to look into this. Oh also dont google African pygmy geese and go to the O in Google second page Bad trojans, viruses and worms await. Unless youve got great protection on your computer. You will know it when you do it one way or hopefully the latter. Warning everyone now!!!

yep I found that too, stupid people with nothing better to do.
I think the fee is $10- $15 a day per bird for a minimum of 30 days, if they show any signs of illness during that period, the clock resets, basically, 30 days of perfect health before they can be released.

Then the air fair to get them here, permit fees (if you can pull one, you have to have a good reason for them to approve it) Best is to say for genetic diversity for the preservation of the species in USA captive populations. Pretty much any other reason will be denied.

Pretty much the permit and base quarantine fees will be ruffly $900- $1000 per pair, plus purchase price, plus the airfare to an approved USDA quarantine facility.
Toni-Marie was telling me recently about her 2002 chicken imports, said it was a nightmare and many thousands of dollars before it was over.

All that in mind, yall beware of all these people advertising import stock in poultry, most arent.

But Lord yes, if you can get some and do it, it would help the stock tremendously here in the US... Get several pairs, and try to find the Indian and Australian while you're looking.

You can go to the
USDA APHIS website and look under import/export permit for the details and to file an application of it.
Hardest thing will be to find an approved shipper from an approved country with all the proper papers to do it as well.
Most will say Lord no.
They will be required to have a valid USA export permit, have them all health certified for every known disease by a certified Avian Vet of that counrty, and must be from one of the few approved countries on the APHIS site. There is a full list one the easy , hard, and banned countries on the site.

You have my interest wound up and this will be one of my projects. Thats about all I can say for now. Thanks for a starting point. Shawn

haha, I figured you'd want to try it Shawn,
Just go to that site I mentioned. It has all the rules and regulations involved in it for you to look at. Pretty hefty stuff, BUT it's doable if your "want to" is big enough.
For something like pygmys, honestly, it would be worth the hassle I feel....go for it, keep me posted
Aubrey
