Does any one use ivermectin in chickens ?

Go to a pharmacy and get a 1ml syringe?

-Kathy

In a perfect world, of course! I found something that will work in a pinch but I'll eventually be modifying the gun to get it to dispense a lower dosage. Shouldn't be too hard, just need a bit of time.

The Ivemectin I use is in an all in one tiny plastic bottle and dropper end. It is 1% strength. Squeeze the bottle bit and an amount the size of a tear drop comes out and onto the skin of the bird! I overdosed my small Milli bantam with 2 drops and shes OK.

The Ivermectin I use which the vet told me to buy as its cheaper than getting it from her is Ivermectin 1% 5ml - Spot On Mite Treatment

It doesn't say hens but that doesn't matter as long as it is 1%.

A tear drop on the skin!

Thanks for the tear drop visual. Do you know if the stuff you use is water or oil based? Also wondering how your milli was acting that made you think it was an overdose? I've read about the symptoms but just curious what your personal experience was.

I've about gotten half of the pens done but will have to finish the others tomorrow. I decided I should treat the birds that will be going back into the pens I cleaned before they go to roost and the mites that are undoubtedly on them crawl back home.
I used a commercial sprayer and it worked great! The mites were dead in seconds and every other critter was scrambling about like a war was going on...because there is!! It's hard to believe that permethrin's are suppose to be relatively safe, almost everything I sprayed died!

I'll be back, I'm off to drug the chickens

Forgive me for not reading all of the previous 18 pages of this thread.

That said...

1) Always seek veterinary advice when possible, particularly with a vet that is trained in the medication you wish to use.
2) Always follow package directions, when possible, to assure best dose accuracy.
3) I have effectively used Ivermectin (for Equine, remixed and diluted) to treat birds in the past. I was under guidance of a trained veterinarian who has extensive field/lab experience with the particular agent she offered would achieve the goal.

If you are going to eat the eggs, find out if you have any allergies to the medication or stabilizers in the medication first.
I have eaten eggs of Ivermectin treated chickens, but I can't speak as to the dangers involved; I didn't even think about it at the time.
Peace!

I think its oil based...

I accidentally squirted 2 "large" doses on her neck 2 weeks after the first dose. She went a bit quiet then was normal. I shouldn't worry if you do a little too much.

I gave them all Fish and chips today. They went berserk like a pack of Velociraptors attacking its pray! They love cod!

I know they are all as fit as a fiddle! Am monitoring though in case any larvae survived.

Those two dam wood pigeons who original bought the mites were on my lawn today. I was dying to shoot them but didn't. I threw the empty DE bottles at them!

Keep up the good work and TERMINATE those
Cyberdyne
critters!

I don't know the conversion from mg to ml but it looks like it takes a lot of ivermectin to kill a little mouse. So to me it seems that 1ml wouldn't do a bit of harm to a bird.

Am I reading that correctly Kathy?
I'd really like to read some solid research pertaining to how long it will continuously kill mites on the birds, and if a higher dosage would lengthen that time frame.

Hey guard if those pigeons come back, blast away!! If anyone gives you grief just say you were target practicing at the DE bottles

The good news...
I got half the pens cleaned up and all the birds were given .5ml under the wing. Thankfully my lovely niece is staying with us and she helped me tremendously! Could just be me but I think they already feel better! I'm quite certain they'll be some of the happiest birds on the farm in the morning. We also have a couple dozen hoop coops that are away from the original breeding pens and I only found 2 that showed signs of mites. Being there's not much wood, there's just not many places for the little suckers to hide. Yet another pro for hoop coops...yay hoop coops!!!

The bad news...
The very first bird I grabbed was a beautiful lavender English Orp...covered in LICE!! The rest of the flock wasn't much better

Fortunately through all this mite research I read plenty about lice and seen many pictures, otherwise I would of probably just thought they were mites. I'm not certain but I believe I read that they're unaffected by ivermectin as they don't drink the blood like mites. I want to be wrong...please tell me I'm wrong ????

Sevin dust will kill feather lice instantly.

It would depend on the size of the bird and if you use the 1% or .05%. If you decide to give 1ml of the 1%, just remember that it is enough to treat *110* one pound birds! On a small enough bird I think that might be approaching the lethal dose, especially if that bird is already sick.

One ml of the 1% has 10mg. What you should give is .02ml per 2.2 pounds.
