Does anybody get FLACK from Family and Friends for having Chickens?

Yes! I am in a mini-conflict with my Dad and Step Mom. They made comments such as.........."it is a little ridiculous that you are building a mansion or Taj Mahal for chickens" and so on and so on. Just because some one else wouldn't get chickens DOESN'T mean that it is wrong for you. I am glad you posted this..........It makes me feel SO much better to know that I'm not the only one out there that gets teased and has their feelings hurt by comments about their chicks! Thanks so much

I'm lucky my friends don't give me that much flack, they understand I'm unique, since I've always had a zoo!

(rabbits, fish, ONE chicken, dogs, gecko, chinchillas, turtles....etc.).

We all enjoy baking and know how many supermarket eggs lack in.. taste. One of our goals since high school was to start a pastry shop/bakery together - and now they're asking if I am going to raise enough chickens... and if I grow some wheat too.

.. I know THAT's not going to happen.

ETA: My parents... well, they lost their influence on me and pets ever since I learned to speak and read! My sister, as long as it's cute and she doesn't have to take care/clean up, she's OK.

My daughter's little girl rat died of the same thing..mammary tumors. It happens when they do not have babies.

Do not feel bad about a tiff with the DH...I have had mine. I had them over the first pet rat for DD, then for the second one and again for the Beta so finally he has given up. His turning point came when one Spring my wolf came walking up to me with something in his mouth. naturally I held my hand out and said "Drop it". he did and it was a mourning dove....no feathers...barely fuzzy and coated in drool!

So, I took it in of course and went to buy parrot baby feeder and such. While we were there getting the food and syringes for feeding, a woman came in with a shoe box. A starling had fallen out of its nest in her yard also and mother would not take it back. she was looking for someone to take it...so I took 'yoda' home. named him yoda because he had one hair/fuzz sticking up on his head. So I have the dove and starling in the spare bedroom, feeding them every hour round the clock for three days. Finally I start putting them on my schedule and we are heading out to dinner one evening when we walk under a tree on our way to the van. A robin fell out of the nest right at my feet...DH said.....

I will get another shoebox and we can take it with us to dinner.

I raised all three, taught them to fly and released them. it was a pleasure seeing the dove building a nest in my yard and raising her family. The Robin stayed too and would follow us around the yard. Yoda took off with the flock of starlings I released him near. But I have rescued sooo many critters in my lifetime I lost count in my 20's.

You are not alone in this...we are all addicted to critters of one sort or another or many sorts.

Many of the dog people I know are at work ALL day and the dogs are kept inside alone with no company at all. Personally, I find it odd that people are OK with keeping large dogs locked in their house or apartment, walk them 2-3 times a day, clean up all that poop and pee and vomit and then think that having chickens is strange. I feel sorry for those indoor dogs. At least chickens (and cats) are self-sufficient creatures that don't really mind having their owners away at work or whatever. It gives me peace of mind knowing my chickens are happy just ranging around the farm all day while I'm away.
