Does anybody have african crowned cranes?

The best place to get them is straight from a breeder. Boggy has mentioned some in the first posts and some chimed in that have them. I have a related pair that I got from a friend. They roam my property after being pinioned, but most people keep them in pens. Do your homework on them, as they are not like most domestic fowl.

Yeah, also not usually human friendly during breeding season. I remember being the bait (involved running & tree climbing) for a pair of them as a kid, while the owner nest-raided or did other chores in the pen.

They can be a little dangerous to handle, but I really really enjoy mine. Mine were not hand raised, but I got them at three months old. While I don't handle them they are super curious and get into everything. They are like two obnoxious children...... Nothing goes unnoticed. mine eat the crane diet, but raid the chickens and dogs food. They free range the woods and pasture for bugs and stuff. They get along pretty well with everyone in such a big space, but can be bullies in smaller areas.
I hope to one day get another pair as babies so I can raise them the same way.

So how cold hardy are these cranes? I would assume they would be tropical but the zoo here in Nebraska lets them out in the winter to walk on top of the snow.

Not very cold hardy. They need to be brought in at 0 degrees (celcius)

Actually I believe crowned cranes are the least cold hardy of all the crane species.
