No I believe the pain would be in his ribs.

Gosh that was funny right there. Not for the person with the sore ribs of course.

I use a heated water bowl. It works fine for them and I keep it in the coop for extra protection from the elements. Now that I have a heat lamp in there I have to keep checking on them to see if they are not having 'spa time' in the waterer and make sure they have towels and robes with fuzzy flip flops and such. It's not a fancy hotel, but it's not bad either.

For those of you that work all day and have to deal with the cold, what do you do about your waterers freezing? I'm hauling water out in the mornings and then have to leave for work. Everybody is roosting by the time I get home. I've been bringing the waterers in at night to thaw, but I know they freeze during the day. The coop has no power and there are no outside outlets on the house. I've also been trying to put out watery oatmeal and grapes and such, but I'm not sure it's helping.

What do you do?

(It was down to 2 deg last night with highs in the low 20s for the last couple of days)

I have the heated water bowl that I fill up first thing along with putting out two large plastic water dishes (about 2 or 3 gallons each). This lets everyone get a turn first thing and also insures that there will be water left in the heated one through the day. I know there are days they run out but they seem to be just fine.

Accept the fact they are going to freeze and it all gets so much easier. When it first froze up I switched to a low tech bundt pan with a rock on top. every morning the chickens wait patiently until it is thawed out. I usually thaw it out either on the kitchen stove or pellet stove. It only takes a few minutes. My coop is not wired and will never be wired so acceptance of frozen water is easy and quickly fixed.

I made a few of those cookie tin water heaters. Man...what a life saver they are...untill this "arctic blast" !

I have a 55 gallon water barrell for "easy watering" It had 3 inch thick ice on it this morning. At -7 degrees, nothing is safe from freezing. Now I am batteling pneumonia...and dealing with frozen waterers.
