Does anyone raise quail on the ground?

I transplanted aloe to the west side of the garden. It'll help provide some deeper shade in the afternoons and wind break but still let air flow. Plus, the hummingbirds love it when it blooms. I'll be working on a brush pile shortly.

More work done in the quail garden today. I'm going to move the lean to forward and put some pots behind it with plants in them that will grow over the top. I'm going to have to move the Mexican heather in the morning before I water though. It's slow but moving along.

Hubs cut the bottoms off some plant pots for me today so I have enough for a few hiding spots plus replacements.

I've decided to keep only 7 birds, one male and 6 females.

Hi all :frow

We're planning on putting quail in our enclosed garden and are making a few small shelters for cover in the rain and wind. I need to know what a good size is for these structures.

The enclosed area is 12' x 16' and we're hoping to be able to keep 2 males and 12 females full time.

Suggestions please!
You have to keep 3 females for each male

Today is the third day the quail have been outside. I haven't seen any panting in the afternoons and they're getting used to my visits. It's down into the upper 70s at night so they have the heat plate and pine shavings. They're also feathering out and starting to look like small adult birds. I'm excited to find out how many hens and roos we have. There are a few I'd like to keep based on color.

We have a good chance of rain next week so this weekend we'll prep for that. I'm taking out the wood structure, or maybe moving it, and getting a plastic outdoor 55 gal trash can we can cut to size, hubs can add a second door and I'll use the pavers and hay for the floor. It's obvious we need more shade cloth, probably for the top half of the east and south facing walls so those we'll have to make as well.
