Does anyone use the nipple water drinkers?

Quote:
Ooooh, good to know-I plan on using 5 gallon buckets in the winter with the immersion bucket heater. I was thinking of using plain old bucket hangers like I use in my horse stalls-they should work fine. I'm hoping I can do 2 nipples per waterer.

Also, I've found that I can just twist the cap once on the jugs and I still get water. It seems to work fine for me, plenty of water flow. I still can't get over how simple these things are, but how awesome they work! Yeah, it doesn't take much to get me going! lol

emit: ebay! Darn it all-I'm definitely going to remember that for next time!! Thanks for the tip!

I love that idea! But my problem seems to only get worse! your cages must be huge! I have a rabbit cage that was altered to make it a 'chicken coop.' It is kind of lame... There is a roosting bar and the feeder I have hooks on the wall, they are only locked up in this 2'x3'x2' cage at night. they have a pen as well, a 6'x8' fenced area as their daily home. I keep food and water in their cage. so as you can tell, I don't have much space to work with. I need something very small, yet able to dispense clean water. Its a conundrum!

Sounds like the Rabbit waterers that can be hung on the outside of your coop is the way to go. Also sounds like you can buy the already made ones at TSC or at PetSmart. That way only the small tube is inside your pen. I have a Lick-It dog kennel waterer in with my younger chicks and they use it. There is no mess with it as there is no bowl or cup associated with it. The only problem may be is if the ball bearing gets some dirt in it and gets stuck in the open position. Then all the water will drip out. I have found the Earth Friendly Fountain advertised in the EggCarton.com catalogue that provides the spout and holder that you attach to your recycled 2 liter pop bottle. It attaches like the Lick-It bottle. The Earth Friendly Fountain is made by Little Giant and costs about $7 + s/h. On the same page is a Weather-Tuff Guinea pig & Rabbit bottle that is 1/2 gallon. It looks like my Lick-it bottle. You can look at that web site at www.EggCartons.com and probably order from there too. I asked for a catalogue to browse through.

When I was on the Farmtek site, they suggested using the screw in Avian Waterer nipples on a "square" pvc pipe that they sell. You could then attach some kind of bottle or hose or ??? at the other end of the square pvc pipe to feed the water to the red nipples. Then all you would have to do is put it inside your hutch with the water source being on the outside. Also, look through this site for other discussions of ways to water chicks. There are several threads on the subject.

Chicas Red&Pepper, My chicken house is also small. I live in a tropical climate so are more worried about heat than cold, so my girls don't get locked up at night. Their house is about 30 inches X 30 inches, in which I have 2 nesting areas and an equal sized area not divided into nesting areas. Out through the front door is a screen porch of hardware cloth that is about the same size as the house. The whole thing is about 2 feet off the ground. Their perches are under the house and also across 2 corners of the pen. The pen is about 18 feet by 8 feet, but is not square. I put some deer netting that comes in about 3 feet X 50 feet long, over the top to keep chicks in and other birds / predators out. The mesh is about 1/2 inch square and is black. I found it at a Garden Shop when I was looking for something to keep deer out of my yard plants. With our drought, I have no yard plants anymore, so the netting was re-purposed for the chicken run. They have all been out in the run for about 3 weeks and so far I've seen no evidence of attempts to break in by coons, civet cats, snakes or anything. DH made a video and put it up on You-Tube. I'll find the link and send it to you. The 2 One-Gal traditional waterers are on plant saucers I turned upside down, but all the chickens manage to get dirt in them, despite the elevation. That's why I'm going to either the Red Nipple thingys or more of the Lick-It style waterers.

You can use the push in nipple with the grommet and use it on any size bottle. I use a half gallon milk jug or they sell the 1 quart pitchers at the dollar store. Heck, you could probably even use something like an old mustard container, small and you would just have to fill it up on a daily basis. I don't know how many birds you have, but it could work. I like the nipples because there is no chance of them clogging. They work like a charm and the water is always clean.

I have my chicks in something similar. Would this work for you? Just tried it last night and they love it! And cleaning is so easy now...

I have the ones with the grommet. They work great in the milk jug, just drill a hole and push it in and it's watertight (I still can't believe how easy that was). From what I understand the screw-kind are better in thicker plastic like buckets?

The screw in ones are for harder plastic like for a bucket. I use both. I an using the push in (grommet style) in both buckets and milk jugs. I use the screw in ones for heavier and thicker plastic.
